Halpin, Shea Help Baseball Power Past UMass-Boston, 17-6

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-years Jack Halpin (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Owen Shea (Northborough, Mass.) combined to go 7-for-10 with three extra-base hits, five runs scored and 12 runs batted in as Babson College exploded past visiting UMass-Boston, 17-6, in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Govoni Field.

With its second consecutive win, Babson moves to 11-10 on the year, while UMass-Boston drops to 9-10.

Shea was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a career-high six RBI while Halpin had four hits, including a triple, and drove in a career-best six runs to pace the Beavers 17-hit attack. Senior Brendan Collins (Abington, Mass.) had two hits and scored twice, and junior Dillon Gonzalez (Beverly, Mass.) had a pair of hits, scored twice and drove in two runs. All nine starters recorded at least one hit on the day for the Green and White.

First-year Daniel Mantoni (Northbridge, Mass.) had a two-run double to go along with a sacrifice fly for the Beacons. Sophomore Adam Gutierrez (Springfield, Mass.) also tripled and drove in a run.

After a scoreless first inning, Babson jumped on top with a four-run second. First-year Joe Barry (Stoneham, Mass.) doubled, sophomore George Crowley (Watertown, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and junior Chris Warren (Medfield, Mass.) walked to load the bases. Shea then cleared the bases with a double down the left field line and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Gonzlez to make it 4-0.

UMass-Boston got one run back in the top of third, but a bases-loaded sacrifice fly, followed by a two-out double to right center by Shea gave the Beavers a 7-1 edge in the bottom of the frame. Gonzalez drove Shea home with an RBI single two batters later, and Halpin capped the inning with a two-run single through the right side to make it a 10-1 game.

The teams traded runs in the fourth and the Beacons scored three times in the fifth highlighted by a two-run double to left by Mantoni, cutting their deficit to 11-5. The Green and White answered back though, as Gonzalez walked and came in on Collins' triple, while Halpin followed with a single to plate Collins, pushing the lead back to 13-5.

Halpin capped the best offensive day of his short career with a three-run double down the right field line in the seventh to put a wrap Babson's highest offensive output of the year.

Sophomore Brody Loughlin (Rockland, Mass.) earned the win for the Beavers to move to 3-0 on the season, giving up four runs on six hits while striking out four in five innings of relief.

Junior Steve Roche (Worcester, Mass.), one of six UMass-Boston pitchers to see action on the day, suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on six hits over 2 2/3 innings.

Babson returns to action on Friday when it travels to MIT at 3:30, while UMass-Boston will host UMass-Dartmouth in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 p.m.
