Men's Soccer Tops No. 14/16 Wheaton, 2-0, To Reach NEWMAC Finals

Box Score

NORTON, Mass.—Junior Andrew Gonzalez (Durham, Conn.) and first-year Christopher Doire (Mansfield, Mass.) both scored second-half goals, as fourth-seeded Babson College upset top-seeded Wheaton College, 2-0, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Cofnerence (NEWMAC) men's soccer semifinal on Saturday afternoon at Keefe Field.

With its fifth straight win, Babson (16-5-0) snapped the Lyons' 12-game unbeaten streak against conference foes while advancing to the league title game for the first time since 2011 and 10th time going back to 1998. Wheaton (No. 14 D3soccer.com/No. 16 NSCAA), which is ranked second in the most recent NCAA regional rankings, falls to 16-3-2 and will find out on Monday if it receives an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Gonzalez notched his fourth goal of the season in the 68th minute to break the scoreless deadlock. Senior Patrick Ellis (Braintree, Mass.) lofted a long throw-in into the box from the right sideline and Gonzalez headed home the go-ahead score to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.

Doire followed with his second marker of the season just nine minutes later to give the Green and White a two-goal edge. After corralling a loose ball from junior Tyler Carlos (Prospect, Conn.), he fended off a Wheaton defender and buried his finish inside the left post.

Two of the Lyons' best scoring opportunities came in the first half, as senior back Ben Altneu (Orleans, Mass.) nearly broke the deadlock in the 40th minute with a wide-open header from the left post that sailed over the crossbar to keep the game level. At the 44:25 mark, classmate Travis Blair (Hastings, N.Y.) was robbed at the doorstep by Beavers' junior goalkeeper Stephen Donato (Morgansville, N.J.), as his header was punched over the crossbar.

Donato stopped four shots to post his second consecutive shutout and fifth of the season, while Wheaton junior Matt Dickey (Newton, Mass.), who entered the game as the nation's leader in goals against average, made a pair of saves.

Both teams finished with 16 shots and the Lyons held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

Babson, which has won nine of its last 10 games and is ranked fifth in the most recent regional rankings, will take on third-seeded WPI in the NEWMAC Championship game at Wheaton on Sunday at 1 p.m.
