Ventura's Strike Sends Men's Soccer Past Bowdoin, 1-0, In OT

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year Logan Ventura (Pittstown, N.J.) buried a 15-yard shot from the right edge of the box 34 seconds into the second overtime, lifting Babson College to a thrilling 1-0 victory over visiting Bowdoin College in non-conference men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

With its fourth straight win, Babson is now 11-4-0 overall, while Bowdoin, which came into the match having won six of its last seven games, drops to 8-5-0 on the year.

Ventura got to a loose ball in front of the Polar Bears bench and carried it nearly 25 yards, dodging a pair of defenders and hitting a brilliant strike past first-year goalkeeper Stevie Van Sicklen (Carlisle, Mass.) and into the upper corner for his first career game-winning tally.

After a scoreless opening 45 minutes that featured very few scoring chances, play opened up after halftime. Bowdoin first-year Sam Ward (Wellesley Hills, Mass.) ripped a 25-yard rocket that Beavers' junior goalkeeper Stephen Donato (Morganville, N.J.) knocked down in the 50th minute, and sophomore Matt Dias Costa (Natick, Mass.) missed wide just outside the six-yard box after a buildup down the right side in the 74th minute.

Babson's best chances in regulation came over the final 13 minutes, earning five corner kicks in a four-minute stretch. Junior Tyler Carlos (Prospect, Conn.) hit a low free kick that deflected out of play from 25 yards in the 82nd minute, and classmate Mario Vicente (Miami, Fla.) corralled a rebound some 35 yards away from goal and hit a shot that was headed on frame before being cleared away for a corner by a sliding Bowdoin defender in the 83rd minute.

The Beavers had the only scoring chance of the first overtime period, but senior Peter Van Noppen's (Providence, R.I.) shot from the left edge of the six-yard box following a scramble in front of the goal deflected off a Polar Bear defender in the 95th minute.

Donato turned away three shots to post his second shutout of the season for the Green and White, while Van Sicklen made five saves for Bowdoin.

The Beavers, who are currently ranked seventh in New England by the NSCAA, held a 16-11 edge in shots and attempted eight of the game's nine corner kicks.

Both teams return to action next Saturday with conference matches as Babson hosts WPI at 2:30 p.m., while the Polar Bears visit Colby College at 1:30 p.m.
