Men's Soccer Edges Springfield, 2-1

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Junior Tyler Carlos (Prospect, Conn.) and first-year Justin Kaplan (Medway, Mass.) both scored first-half goals, and junior goalkeeper Tanner Click (Lawrence, Kan.) made a career-high seven saves as visiting Babson College defeated Springfield College, 2-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.

Carlos opened the scoring with his first goal of the season in the 27th minute. First-year Logan Ventura (Pittstown, N.J.) served a cross into the box from the right side that skipped past a Pride defender to Carlos, who beat junior goalkeeper Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) for a 1-0 lead.

Kaplan extended the advantage with his third goal of the season just 5:04 before halftime. Sophomore Shane Mandel (Syosset, N.Y.) hit a cross from the right flank toward the back post, where Kaplan buried his finish to a make it 2-0. The Green and White nearly extended the lead before the half, but both Carlos and Mandel had shots saved off the goal line by Springfield defenders.

The Pride cut the deficit in half in the 59th minute, as sophomore Taylor Gilfoy (Holliston, Mass.) notched his third goal of the year. First-year Curtis Bolduc (South Windsor, Conn.) corralled a loose ball outside the box and found Gilfoy, whose header just slipped past the outstretched hands of Click to make it 2-1.

Springfield earned five late corner kicks, but the Babson defense did not allow a shot over the final 11 minutes of the match to secure its second consecutive league victory.

Click made four of his seven saves in the first half for the Beavers, while Schmid finished with six stops for the Pride.

The Green and White held a 17-10 edge in shots and a 10-8 advantage in corner kicks on the day.
