Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-years Jon Mleczko (Dorchester, Mass.) and Michael Phillips (Richmond Heights, Ohio) scored just 1:20 apart early in the second period, and sophomore goalie Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) made 25 saves as seventh-ranked Babson College rallied for a 3-2 victory over Colby College in non-conference men's ice hockey action on Friday night at the Babson Skating Center.
With its second straight win, Babson moves to 11-2-0 on the year, while Colby, which saw its two-game winning streak come to an end, drops to 5-4-2 overall.
Senior Troy Starrett (Bellingham, Mass.) netted a goal for the second straight night, while five different players, including first-year Patrick Young (Medford, Mass.) contributed an assist.
First-year Colin Reilly (Pelham, N.Y.) and EJ Rauseo (Methuen, Mass.) each scored for the Mules. Seniors Ben Chwick (Purchase, N.Y.) and Brendan Cosgrove (Exeter, N.H.) both chipped in with an assist.
Colby started fast, jumping to a 2-0 lead as Reilly and Rauseo got on the board just 2:04 apart in the opening eight minutes of the game. Reilly notched his second goal of the season at the 5:47 mark, ripping a shot past Murray from just inside the blue line, and Rauseo followed at 7:51 with his third of the season just 12 seconds into the game's first power play.
After Starrett hit the crossbar and senior Ben Kravitz (Huntington, N.Y.) had a shot go through the crease and off the post in the opening seven minutes, the Green and White was finally able to cut the deficit in half late in the first period. Starrett took a pass from senior Ryan Heavey (Andover, Mass.) up the left side and beat Mules' junior goal Sam Parker (Cambridge, Mass.) over his left shoulder at 16:04 to make it 2-1.
Mleczko kept the momentum going, tying the game just 2:44 into the second period by knocking home a loose puck for his first collegiate goal. Phillips then gave Babson the lead for good with his fifth tally of the season off of assists from juniors Andrew Bonazza (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) and Mike Driscoll (Milton, Mass.) to make it 3-2 at the 4:04 mark.
Both teams had quality scoring opportunities in the third period, but were unable to solve Parker or Murray. Parker made seven of his 11 third-period saves to help Colby kill off an interference penalty at 12:01, and Murray was at his best late, recording six of his nine saves in the final period in the game's last three and a half minutes.
Murray made back-to-back stops from point blank range on sophomore Alex Walsh (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Rauseo just inside the three-minute mark, and then robbed senior Nick Lanza (Rocky Hill, Conn.) with a glove save at 18:54. Murray also go some help as senior Nik Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass.) blocked a pair of shots from the point in the game's final 20 seconds to help secure the win.
Parker finished with 34 saves in a losing effort for the Mules, who were outshot 37-27 on the night.
Both teams return to action on Thursday night as Babson will face fifth-ranked Norwich in a 7:30 p.m. start at historic Fenway Park, while Colby travels to Southern Maine for a 7 p.m. faceoff.
