LAKE PLACID, N.Y.—The Babson College men's and women's alpine ski teams recorded a trio of top-five finishes on Saturday, helping the men come in second and the women sixth on the opening day of the Clarkson University Carnival at Whiteface Mountain.
The men's team used a third-place result from sophomore Graham Quisenberry (Farmington, Conn.) and a fifth-place finish from classmate Carter Dowd (Salt Lake City, Utah) to post a total time of 8:55.27. The Beavers finished seven seconds behind first-place Castleton State, which won its first race of the season. The host Golden Knights came in sixth as only four of their eight skiers finished both runs.
First-year Kristen Sweeney (Westport, Conn.) put together a pair of great runs to finish third overall for the third straight race. The women's finished with a total time of 8:24.22, coming in just behind sixth-place Massachusetts. Brown placed all four of its scoring competitors in the top nine to win its 25th straight MacConnell Division race.
Quisenberry used a pair of solid runs to post a two-run time of 1:41.99 to come in less than a second ahead of Dowd (1:42.56), who now has five top-10 results this winter. Despite three of the Beavers top skiers failing to complete both runs, their depth was a major key in posting a second-place finish. Junior Jack Barber (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) came in 16th, matching his best career finish, while first-years Evan Cooke (Brookline, N.H.) and Max Barber (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) were 22nd and 28th, respectively.
Sweeney finished with a two-run time of 1:47.67, which was just over two seconds behind the winner, while senior Jaclyn LaCavalla (New City, N.Y.) was 35th with a time of 2:02.24. Sophomore Anne-Frederic Duval (Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec) finished 44th and sophomore Caroline Boffa (Easton, Conn.) came in 47th to round out the team's scoring competitors.
The Beavers return to action on Sunday when they compete in the giant slalom for the second straight day at Whiteface Mountain.
