Driscoll, Murray Send No. 6 Men's Ice Hockey Past No. 9/12 UMass-Boston, 2-0

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass.—Junior Mike Driscoll (Milton, Mass.) broke a scoreless deadlock 14:07 into the second period and sophomore goalie Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) made 30 saves to earn his fifth career shutout, lifting sixth-ranked Babson past UMass-Boston (No. 9 D3hockey.com/No. 12 USCHO.com), 2-0, in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East men's ice hockey action on Friday night.

With its fourth straight win, Babson is now 15-3-0 overall and 9-2-0 in ECAC East play, while UMass-Boston, which has dropped two consecutive games, falls to 13-3-2 overall and 6-3-2 in conference play.

Senior Troy Starrett (Bellingham, Mass.) added an insurance goal 3:37 into the third period for the Beavers while Driscoll and senior Ben Kravitz (Huntington, N.Y.) each had an assist.

Murray, who earned Co-Goalie of the Week honors from the ECAC East on Monday, was tremendous between the pipes. He made 15 of his 30 stops in the second period and the Beavers' defense blocked 17 shots on the night helping him tie for the NCAA lead with his 14th victory of the season.

Sophomore Zach Andrews (Coral Springs, Fla.) stopped a career-high 45 shots but fell to 10-2-2 for the Beacons. Captain Travis Daniel (North Brunswick, N.J.) and UMas- Lowell transfer Stephen Buco (North Providence, R.I.) recorded a team-high five shots apiece in the loss.

The two teams skated to a 0-0 tie through the first 20 minutes with Babson earning a 14-8 shot advantage.

Driscoll finally broke the scoreless tie when he sent a sliding shot past Andrews for a 1-0 lead. The Beavers' first two shots of the shift were stopped by Andrews but the Beacons' failure to clear the zone cost them, as Driscoll managed to get a shot off while slipping to the ice and Andrews never it saw until it was too late.

UMass-Boston nearly tied it moments later but Nate Milam's (Westland, Mich.) wrap-around chance was waved off after the referees blew the whistle because the net was off its moorings.

The Beacons put together another great chance before the final buzzer of the second period, when Murray let a rebound bounce off of his shoulder, but Kravitz gloved the puck down and settled it, before it could careen into the netting.

Starrett took advantage of several Beacons' miscues to score his third goal of the year, giving the Green and White a two-goal edge early in the third. Driscoll sent a soft shot from just inside the blue line that Andrews knocked down, but the big rebound slid out to Starrett who buried the puck into the wide-open net.

UMass Boston would create several strong chances in the third period but Murray was up to the task on most of them and the other good looks were sent just wide of the net.

The Beavers outshot UMass Boston 47-30 for the contest, with the two teams combining to go 0-for-7 on the power-play (Babson 0-4, UMass Boston 0-3).

UMass-Boston and Babson College will return to action Saturday at 4 p.m. when they play the second game of their home-and-home series at the Babson Skating Center.
