Men's Soccer Eliminated By Wheaton In NEWMAC Semifinals

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Second-seeded Wheaton College got a pair of goals from sophomore Ben Altneau (Orleans, Mass.) and scored four times in the second half en route to a 5-1 victory over third-seeded Babson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men' soccer tournament semifinal on Saturday afternoon at Steinbrenner Stadium.

With its sixth consecutive victory Wheaton moves to 15-5-0 on the year and advances to the conference title game, where it will face top-seeded MIT, for the first time since 2010. Babson sees its season come to an end at 11-8-1.

Senior Kevin Israel (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) scored the Beavers lone goal, heading home a throw in from junior Patrick Ellis (Braintree, Mass.).

Senior Adam Shioli (Sandwich, Mass.) and sophomores Noah Kossoff (New York, N.Y.) and Michael Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) each scored once for the Lyons. Juniors Travis Blair (Hastings, N.Y.), Scott Enman (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and Luke Finkelstein (Peabody, Mass.), as well as sophomore Kevin Gil (Pawtucket, R.I.) all chipped in with an assist.

Altneau opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the season just 16:29 into the match, taking a feed from Enman and burying a shot inside the left post, to give Wheaton a 1-0 lead. Babson leveled the score just under 14 minutes later as Israel struck for his fifth tally of the season at the 30:12 mark.

The Beavers held a 13-5 edge in first-half shots and attempted the only three corner kicks of the period, but Lyons sophomore goalkeeper Matt Dickey (Newton, Mass.) made 10 stops in the opening 45 minutes.

Wheaton took the lead for good on Shioli's blast from the top of the box just 5:20 into the second half. Altneau notched his second goal of the game at 58:37 to take a two-goal lead. Williams followed with his second goal of the year at 69:23 to give the Lyons a 4-1 edge, and Kossoff capped the scoring with his eighth marker of the season, a bullet that found the upper right corner, top cap the scoring in the 73rd minute.

Senior goalkeeper Jackson Klein (Maplewood, N.J.) finished with seven saves for Babson, while Dickey was forced to make just one of his season-high 11 stops after halftime for Wheaton.

The Lyons outshot the Beavers 17-6 in the final 45 minutes and 21-20 for the game, and the teams combined for 33 fouls.
