Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year Michael Phillips (Richmond Heights, Ohio) recorded a goal and an assist, and sophomore goalie Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) made 23 saves as seventh-ranked Babson blanked 10th-ranked Amherst, 2-0, in an early-season battle of unbeatens on Saturday afternoon at the Babson Skating Center.

With its first win over Amherst since 2007, Babson is now 8-0-0 on the year, while the Lord Jeffs drop to 5-1-0.

Junior forward Andrew Bonazza (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) picked up a goal for the Beavers, his second game-winner of the season, while sophomore Jared Wiedemann (Pembroke, Mass.) notched an assist for his first point of the year.

Babson, which entered the game tied for second nationally on the power play, converting 33.3 percent of its chances (11-of-33), took advantage of an early Amherst penalty to jump ahead 1-0 just 6:36 into the first period. Phillips collected the puck on the left wing and fed Bonazza, who beat Lord Jeffs' sophomore goalie Dave Cunningham (Arlington, Mass.) for his second goal of the season.

Both goalies were tested early in the second period as Murray made three stops and Cunningham came up with a pair of saves in the opening 3:14. Amherst held a slim 11-10 lead in shots on goal in the middle period, but the Beavers again made the most of its opportunities, taking a two-goal edge with another power play score late in the period.

Just five seconds after Amherst was called for holding, Phillips knocked home the rebound of a shot by Wiedemann from the left point to make it 2-0 at the 16:22 mark.

The Lord Jeffs' best opportunities to get on the board came late in the third period following a cross-checking penalty on Babson at the 16:17 mark. Senior Ben Kravitz (Huntington, N.Y.) blocked a pair of shots by Amherst senior Brian Safstrom (Woodinville, Wash.) on the ensuing power play, and Murray made back-to-back saves on senior Andrew Kurlandski (Kirkwood, Mo.) with just over a minute to go, sealing the victory.

Murray made five of his 23 stops in the final 20 minutes to earn his second shutout of the season. Cunningham finished with 26 saves for Amherst.

The Beavers finished 2-of-5 on the power play and killed off both of the Lord Jeffs' extra-man opportunities. The Green and White is a perfect 23-for-23 on the penalty kill this season, which leads the nation.

Babson returns to action when it travels to face 12th-ranked Williams on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m., while Amherst will host Middlebury next Friday at 7 p.m.
