Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Dillon Ventura (Pittstown, N.J.) had two assists and six different players scored, lifting Babson College to an easy 6-0 victory over visiting Emerson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
With the win, Babson closes out the regular season at 11-7-1 overall and 4-2-1 in conference play, while Emerson sees its year come to an end at 7-10-0 overall and 0-7-0 in the league.
Seniors Kevin Israel (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) and Mike Fisher (Longmeadow, Mass.), sophomores Tyler Carlos (Prospect, Conn.), Telvin Lopes (Pawtucket, R.I.), and James Rosso (Hingham, Mass.), and first-year Moses Lim (Torrance, Calif.) all registered goals for the Beavers, who led 2-0 at halftime. Junior Brenden Matthews (Southborough, Mass.) chipped in with an assist.
Carlos got Babson on the board with his first goal of the season at the 26:28 mark of the opening half, taking a thru ball from Ventura, eluding a defender, and burying a shot from just inside the penalty spot under the crossbar for a 1-0 lead. Israel struck for his fourth goal of the year, and second in as many games, just 43 seconds later, converting a feed from Ventura to double the lead.
Fisher notched his fourth goal of the year just 5:35 after halftime to make it 3-0. The senior midfielder corralled a ball on the left side of the box, and then beat Emerson sophomore goalkeeper Carter Bowers (Gorham, Maine), who came charging off his line, with a low shot inside the right post.
The Beavers, who played 29 men on Saturday, got a lift from its substitutes to tack on three late goals. Lopes picked up his third goal of the season at the 79:35 mark, before Rosso and Lim registered their first career tallies just 35 seconds apart in the 87th minute for the final margin.
Senior goalkeeper Jackson Klein (Maplewood, N.J.) made three saves in just under 80 minutes of action, and sophomore Tanner Click (Lawrence, Kan.) recorded one stop over the final 10:25. Bowers made a pair of saves for the Lions, who were outshot 20-8 on the day.
Babson, which is unbeaten in its last four conference matches, locked up the third seed in next week's NEWMAC Tournament, and will take on second-seeded Wheaton next weekend. The full conference tournament pairings will be announced later this afternoon by the conference office.
Game Notes: Babson is now 1-0-0 against Emerson, which joined the conference on July 1…The six goals scored on Saturday by the Beavers are a season high, and the first time they have scored six times against an opponent since beating Springfield 6-1 on October 16, 2010…The shutout was Babson's seventh of the season and third straight against a NEWMAC opponent…Prior to Saturday's match the Beavers honored their seven seniors, who have gone 56-18-10 since arriving on campus in the fall of 2010.
