Babson Skating Center Welcomes New Electric Zamboni

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Last spring, the Babson College Department of Athletics and Recreation welcomed the arrival of a new electric ice resurfacer, the Zamboni 552,  an emission-free vehicle capable of handling the busy schedule of the Babson Skating Center.  The resurfacer traveled coast to coast, from Zamboni's U.S. facility in Paramount, California, to Babson Park.

"The addition of an electric ice resurfacer has been very welcoming," said Assistant Director of Athletics for Facilities and Recreation Andy Dutton. "Zamboni is the leader in the industry and its emission-free machine will keep the cold air inside and the hot air outside—good ice loves cold air.  As we keep our ice down all year, it's important to have the sustainability efforts by the College displayed in such a visible way."

In 2009, Zamboni delivered its 1,000th electric ice resurfacing machine, which coincided with the company's 50th anniversary of the production of electric powered ice resurfacing machines. Since 1959, the Zamboni 552 has become increasingly popular as an alternative to fuel powered machines.  Zamboni continues to lead the way within the industry by integrating electric power advances to enhance the performance of the Model 552.

"The electric Zamboni is a triple bottom-line solution for the Babson ice rink, providing lower operational costs, cleaner indoor air, and energy efficient operation," said Babson Sustainability Office Director Dallase Scott.  "By eliminating the emissions in the rink from the old fossil-fuel powered Zamboni, the new electric Zamboni will improve the indoor air quality in the rink, making it a healthier space for our community while providing savings from lower energy costs.  This upgrade is another step forward for Babson's goal of climate neutrality by 2050 and shows Babson Athletics continued sustainability leadership."

With a history that spans over six decades, the Zamboni Company preserves its founder's legacy through continuing innovation and its support of the ice sport industry.  As the leader in ice resurfacing technology, Zamboni remains the choice for ice rink operators throughout the world.  The official ice resurfacer of the NHL, Zamboni houses the California-based plant, which has manufactured machines since 1949, and has maintained a Canadian operation since 1967 in Brantford, Ontario.
