Box Score WORCESTER, Mass.—Babson College senior Dillon Ventura (Pittstown, N.J.) scored 1:26 into the match and Clark University got a tally from Oscar Zapata (Lima, Peru) early in the second half as the sides battled to a 1-1 double overtime draw in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Granger Soccer Complex.
The result leaves the Beavers' record at 7-5-1 overall and 1-2-1 in league play, while Clark snaps a nine-match losing streak in conference contests and sees its record now stand at 3-8-2 and 0-3-1 in NEWMAC matchups.
Babson started fast as junior Justin Laurenzo (Park Ridge, N.J.) flicked a throw in to Venutra, who headed home his team-leading fifth goal of the season to taking a 1-0 lead just 86 seconds into the match. The Beavers dominated the statsheet but missed on several scoring opportunities that could have put the game away early.
The Beavers kept the pressure on, outshooting the Cougars 16-6 in the first 45 minutes. Senior Mike Fisher (Longmeadow, Mass.) had a pair of excellent scoring chances – the first in the 13th minute and the second in the 18th minute – but Alfonso Alvarez (San Salvador, El Salvador) turned back both opportunities to keep Clark within striking distance.
Kenneth Vera (Franklin Square, N.Y.) had Clark's best chance to get on the board in the 38th minute when he corralled a loose ball and let go a bending shot, but Beaver netminder, senior Jackson Klein (Maplewood, N.J.), was able to deflect it away.
The Scarlet and White finally broke through in the 51st minute when Vaske Gjino (Worcester, Mass.) sent a ball into the box that looked like it was going to go out of bounds behind the goal but Zapata came out of nowhere to tap the ball by a diving Klein for the equalizer.
Babson had a final chance in the closing minutes of regulation to go ahead, but again Alvarez was up to the task. Ventura was able to put a Clark defender on his back and spin, getting off a low rocket that Alvarez was able to turn away with a diving stop to his right in the 88th minute.
The Cougars had their best crack in the first extra session when Zapata and Vera worked the give and go but Vera's shot banged off the post after Klein denied him any open area into the net on the far right side.
In the end, the Beavers held a 30-12 advantage in shots (13-5 in shots on goal) and an incredible 13-1 edge in corner kicks.
Alvarez was the star of the afternoon, making a career-high 11 stops for Clark, while Klein needed to only make four saves in 110 minutes of action.
Babson will return to action on Monday when it travels to Eastern Connecticut State for a 3 p.m. start, while the Cougars next play on Wednesday at Emmanuel College.
