Baseball Fends Off UMass-Boston, 4-3

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Junior Trevor Boyce (Canton, Mass.) drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and senior Rick Gilbody (Hanover, Mass.) picked up the win in relief as the Babson College baseball team defeated visiting UMass-Boston, 4-3, in non-conference action at Govoni Field on Friday afternoon.

Now winners of three straight and seven of their last eight, the Beavers improved to 17-11 on the year. Meanwhile, the Beacons saw their four-game winning streak come to a halt as they fell to 14-10.

Gilbody (4-0) came on in relief of junior starter Kyle Lyon (Flemington, N.J.) and pitched 2 1/3 shutout innings, allowing one hit, walking two and striking out two. Lyon went 6 2/3 innings and allowed three runs – only two of which were earned – while walking two and fanning five. Boyce and junior John Botelho (Tempe, Ariz.) each finished with two hits apiece for Babson, while junior Chris Kucher (Westwood, Mass.) had one hit and scored a pair of runs.

First-year Kyle Szatrowski (Agawam, Mass.) (0-2) took the loss on the mound for UMass-Boston, despite a solid outing of 5 1/3 innings of relief, giving up one run on three hits and striking out three. Junior Matt Consiglio (Southbury, Conn.) and senior Mike Mattei (Spencer, Mass.) finished with two hits apiece to pace the visitors' offense.

The Beacons struck first when Consiglio drove in first-year Collin Keefer (Charlotte, N.C.) with a single to left in the top of the first, but Babson responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Boyce scored the first run when he came home on an RBI-grounder by senior captain Travis Jonasson (Needham, Mass.), and Kucher scored the second on a clutch two-out hit by senior Billy Miller (Sagamore Beach, Mass.).

The Beavers threatened to break the game open in the third, as junior Conor Kortmann (Manalapan, N.J.) drew a bases-loaded walk with only one out to make it 3-1. However, sophomore starter Gabe May (Portsmouth, N.H.) recorded a key strikeout and Szatrowski came on to induce a line-out to right as the Beacons escaped further damage.

UMass-Boston drew to within one with an unearned run in the fifth, as first-year Nick Grassetti (Agawam, Mass.) singled, moved to third on an error, and scored on a fielder's choice grounder by senior Mark McCormack (Shelton, Conn.). The Beacons then tied the game the following inning when first-year Charles LaPaglia (Marshfield, Mass.) was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly to deep center by senior Wilberto Sanjuro (Boston, Mass.).

It remained a 3-3 game until the bottom of the seventh, when freshman Dillon Gonzalez Beverly, Mass.) hit a one-out single to left and stole second – his 11th theft of the season. Boyce then followed with a base hit just beyond the reach of lunging second baseman Mattai, and Gonzalez easily beat the throw home to give Babson a 4-3 lead.

UMass-Boston staged one last rally in the top of the ninth, using two walks and a hit-batsman to loaded the bases with two down. However, Gilbody got LaPaglia swinging on a 2-2 breaking ball to end the game and secure the Beavers' third consecutive victory.

Game notes: In his four victories this season, Gilbody has pitched a combined total of 14 innings of relief without allowing a run... Jonasson went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 13 games... Babson has now won four of the last six meetings between these two teams.
