Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College sophomore Shayne Anderson (Dorchester, Mass.) scored the game-tying goal with 39.6 seconds left in regulation to help the host Beavers secure a 2-2 overtime tie with nationally-ranked Castleton State College in an ECAC East men's ice hockey matchup at the Babson Skating Center on Saturday afternoon.
With the deadlock, the Beavers extended their unbeaten streak to seven contests (4-0-3), as they moved to 7-11-3 overall and 7-4-3 in league play. Meanwhile, Castleton State, which entered the weekend ranked fourth in the most recent U.S. College Hockey Online national poll, moved to 15-4-2 overall and 10-2-2 in the conference.
Castleton State got on the board early when junior Dan Bell (Victoria, British Columbia) took a centering pass from junior Justin Alonzo (San Jose, Calif.), skated across the slot, and tucked a shot around senior goalie Andrew Peabody (Marblehead, Mass.) and inside the right post at 2:07 of the opening period. Sophomore Nick Lazorko (Rockwall, Texas) also picked up an assist on the goal, which was Bell's 12th of the season.
Babson answered with a powerplay goal later in the first, as first-year Mike Driscoll (Milton, Mass.) received a feed from classmate Andrew Bonazza (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) on the right side of the crease and stuffed it past sprawling goalie Erick Cinotti (Mahwah, N.J.) for his sixth goal of the winter at 8:44. Beavers' senior captain Mike Hoban (Medfield, Mass.) was credited with the second assist on the play.
The Spartans had a great chance to regain the lead after Babson was handed a major penalty midway through the second, but Peabody made six of his 19 saves in the session during the five-minute powerplay to keep the contest knotted at 1-1.
Castleton State regained the lead midway through the third, beginning when senior Cody Ayers (Colorado Springs, Colo.) took a pass from freshman Ryan Frost (Fullerton, Calif.) and fired a shot from the left circle that was saved by Peabody. Bell then collected the rebound and fired home his second goal of the night and 13th of the season at 8:18, giving the Spartans a 2-1 advantage.
It remained 2-1 until the closing moments of regulation, when Babson emptied its net following a Castleton State penalty for a two-skater advantage with 2:09 left. The strategy paid off in the final minute, as Anderson took a cross-ice pass from junior PT Donato (Arlington, Mass.), moved across the blue line, and blasted a low slapshot from the right point. Cinotti appeared to make the save initially, but the puck squirted through his pads and trickled over the goal line for the game-tying powerplay score with just 39.6 remaining. It was Anderson's second goal of the year, with assists going to Donato and sophomore Ryan Heavey (Andover, Mass.).
The Beavers carried their momentum into the overtime period, outshooting the Spartans 4-0 in the final five minutes. However, Cinotti turned away all four bids, including a close-range wrister by Donato at 2:45 and a one-timer by sophomore Troy Starrett (Bellingham, Mass.) from the high slot at 4:38.
Peabody was once again sensational in net for Babson, as the red-hot goalie finished with a season-high 42 saves. At the other end, Cinotti made 29 stops in goal for Castleton State.
