Box Score MILTON, Mass. -- Babson College rallied from an early two-goal deficit to claim its fifth straight victory, as the Beavers defeated host Curry College, 4-2, in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday night.
Now riding its longest winning streak since 2004-05, Babson improves to 5-2-2 overall, while the Colonels fall to 4-4-1 on the year.
Curry freshman Brandon Gilmore (Quincy, Mass.) tallied both goals in the opening frame as the Colonels took a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. His first came at 15:56, starting when junior Michael Lopez (Newton, Mass.) won the face-off in Babson's defensive zone. Lopez sent the puck to assistant captain Connor Hendry (Calgary, Alberta) who fed an open Gilmore in front of the net for the game's first goal.
Gilmore's second score came just three minutes later off assists from Hendry and junior Josh Pineiro (Huntington, Calif.). Gilmore took a slap shot from outside the slot that sailed over the shoulder of the Beavers' senior netminder Zeke Testa (Wellesley, Mass.). Meanwhile, Curry sophomore goaltender Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.) turned away all 13 shots that he faced between the pipes as the hosts took a 2-0 advantage into the first intermission.
The second period saw Babson score three unanswered to goals. Junior Troy Starrett (Bellingham, Mass.) one-timed the puck past Mohney just 5:26 into the stanza, with senior PT Donato (Arlington, Mass.) and freshman Phil Saviuk (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) picking up assists on the play. Less than one minute later the Beavers tied the game at two apiece, as senior Ryan Smith (Lynnfield, Mass.) skated with the puck around a Curry defender and beat Mohney after he received consecutive passes from senior Jay Haseley (Rochester, N.Y.) and junior Matt O'Neill (Norwell, Mass.).
Babson scored the eventual game-winner with seven minutes remaining to play in the second. Junior Nik Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass.) gave his team the lead for good when he tipped the puck just past the glove of Mohney at 13:08. The decisive score was assisted by sophomores Mike Driscoll (Milton, Mass.) and Andrew Bonazza (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia).
Curry outshot Babson in each of the final two periods, but after giving up two goals in the first, Testa was magnificent the rest of the way. The senior captain stopped all 13 shots that he faced in the second and then fended off each of the Colonels' 12 bids in the third, giving him 34 saves in the contest. Meanwhile, Driscoll punctuated the victory an unassisted empty-net goal with 21 seconds remaining in regulation as the Beavers secured the 4-2 win.
Babson edged Curry in shots, 37-36. Both teams were unsuccessful on the power-play, with the Beavers going 0-for-3 on the man-advantage and the Colonels going 0-for-2. Mohney made 33 saves in net in the loss.
The Beavers will now break for the holidays before resuming play at the two-day Middlebury Classic on December 30-31. Babson will open the tournament with a 4:00 p.m. game against the host Panthers on the 30th.
