Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass -- Babson College erupted for a season-high six goals, including two more from junior Troy Starrett (Bellingham, Mass.), as the Beavers picked up their first win of the season with a 6-1 victory over visiting Castleton State College in an ECAC East men's ice hockey matchup at the Babson Skating Center on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Beavers are now 1-2-2 overall and 1-2-1 in league play, while the Spartans fall to 2-3-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the conference.
The Beavers jumped in front late in the opening period, as senior captain Ryan Smith (Lynnfield, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season on the powerplay at 16:00. They then tacked on two more scores in the first 10 minutes of the second period to build a 3-0 cushion. Starrett scored his first of the night and third of the year at 5:21, and sophomore Andrew Bonazza (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) followed with his second of the season during a man-advantage at 9:55.
Castleton State netted its lone goal of the night against Babson first-year goalie Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) in the waning moments of the second. Junior Ross Herzog (Wainwright, Alberta) scored his second of the winter off feeds from junior Nick Lazorko (Rockwall, Texas) and junior Ryan Delorme (Kanata, Ontario) with just three seconds remaining to cut the hosts' lead to 3-1 heading into the final period of play.
The third period was all Babson, as the Green and White scored three unanswered goals in an eight-minute stretch to break the game open. Junior Nik Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass.) scored his first goal as a Beaver at 8:06, Starrett added his second of the evening at 11:45, and sophomore Mike Driscoll (Milton, Mass.) potted his first of the season at 15:26 to complete the 6-1 victory.
Murray picked up his first collegiate win, finishing with 24 saves in net for the Beavers. Babson also saw nine different players record assists in the victory, including two apiece by Bonazza and senior PT Donato (Arlington, Mass.).
Thomas Shelley made 24 stops in defeat for Castleton State.
