Men's Soccer Hands #20 Eastern Connecticut State First Loss, 1-0, In Double Overtime

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College senior midfielder Salo Guindi (Mexico City, Mexico) scored the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute as the Beavers handed visiting Eastern Connecticut State University its first loss of the season, 1-0, in a non-conference matchup of regional men's soccer powerhouses at Hartwell-Rogers Field on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, Babson improved to 12-3-2 on the season, while the Warriors, ranked 20th in the country by D3soccer.com and 25th in the nation by the NSCAA, saw Division III's second-longest unbeaten streak come to an end at 15 games as they dropped to 14-1-1.

Both teams missed opportunities on early corner kicks, as ECSU senior Matt Furman (Montville, Conn.) had his glancing header off a Cory Tobler (Portland, Conn.) corner snatched up by Babson junior keeper Jackson Klein (Maplewood, N.J.) at 4:55, and Beavers' senior captain Eric Anderson (Scituate, Mass.) had his header go well wide of the far right post off a corner kick from sophomore Brenden Matthews (Marlborough, Mass.) at 7:24.

Babson's best chance of the opening period came during a flurry in the 16th minute, beginning when sophomore Justin Laurenzo (Park Ridge, N.J.) had his shot blocked in front. Matthews then fired a close-range shot toward the lower right corner on the rebound, but Warriors' senior goalie Jordan Munsell (Waterford, Conn.) made a diving save to his left to knock the ball beyond the post at 15:45.

Eastern Connecticut State had a golden opportunity less than 10 minutes later, as a deflected cross settled just outside the six-yard box. Furman came charging in from the left side and was the first to reach the loose ball, but his sliding shot sailed well over the crossbar at 24:31. The Warriors then threatened again in the waning seconds of the half, but Beavers' junior Dillon Ventura (Pittstown, N.J.) took the ball off the foot of wide open junior Mitch Power (Douglas, Mass.) deep in the box and junior Salvatore Percival (Andover, Mass.) blocked Eastern junior Zach Kice's (Denver, Colo.) shot moments later as the contest remained scoreless heading into the break.

The Warriors had the first strong chance of the second stanza, as junior Tom Vear (Monson, Mass.) collected a loose ball just outside the box and blasted a shot on net from 20 yards out. Klein was able to make a fantastic diving deflection to his right, and the rebound was cleared away by the Babson defense.

The Beavers threatened numerous times over the remainder of regulation but would fail to snap the scoreless deadlock. Junior Kevin Israel (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) had the first chance when he took a pass from Laurenzo and fired a bending shot from 25 yards out, but his bid hit the crossbar and was cleared by the defense at 67:15. Six minutes later, Israel was the recipient of a long cross from Guindi, but his leaping header from point-blank range drifted just wide of the upper right corner at 73:04.

Babson's best opportunity of the second half came at 78:46, when Anderson's flick off a Guindi cross made it past a sprawling Munsell. However, Warriors' senior back Bradley Fletcher (Middletown, Conn.) was there to block the shot on the goal line, and the rebound was cleared away to preserve the scoreless tie.

Each team had a single shot in the first overtime session. Eastern Connecticut State's came when Kice got behind the Babson's backfield and hit a glancing shot from 10 yards out, but Klein corralled it inside the right post at 93:29. Babson's lone bid came at 98:41, when senior Jimmy Stento (Needham, Mass.) had his shot off a loose ball at the top of the 22-yard bubble sail over the net.

The Warriors had one final chance at the victory just seconds after the start of the second overtime, as Power found space in the middle of the field off the opening kickoff. He then fired a shot from 25 yards away, but it deflected off a teammate and went wide of the left post.

Babson finally put the game away in the 102nd minute, beginning when Anderson chipped a cross from the right side toward the back post. Laurenzo then one-timed a pass back to the right side of the goal mouth, where Guindi hit a rocket off the bounding ball that sailed past the outstretched arms of Munsell and into the upper left corner for his third goal of the season at 101:09. The goal snapped Babson's scoreless streak of over 324 minutes – the program's longest since 1986 – and it halted Eastern Connecticut State's shutout streak of 534 minutes spanning more than four games.

Klein finished with four saves in the victory for Babson, while Munsell turned away three shots at the other end for Eastern Connecticut State. The Beavers held a slim 14-12 advantage in shots, as well as a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
