Anderson Sets All-Time Points Mark; Men's Soccer Topples Wheaton, 5-3

Box Score

NORTON, Mass.—Senior forward Eric Anderson (Scituate, Mass.) scored two second half goals to go along with an assist to become the program's all-time points leader as visiting Babson College picked up a 5-3 victory over Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) soccer action at Keefe Field.

With his second goal of the game, Anderson broke the all-time points mark of 141 set by Tim Winn in 2008. The two-time All-American now has 143 points on 55 goals and 33 assists in 80 career games. Anderson's two tallies came just 1:27 apart midway through the second half and helped give the Beavers their biggest lead of the day at 5-2.

Having experienced five straight one-goal games entering today, the teams played to a two-goal margin for the first time since 2008.  Wheaton fell to 7-5-3 overall and 1-2-2 in league play, while the Beavers extended their conference unbeaten streak to 36 games to improve to 11-2-1 and 4-0-0 in the NEWMAC.

In a game that saw three penalty-kick tallies and two goals off restarts, Lyon senior Max Swanson (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) finished with two goals to lead the hosts while Babson's Ayo Iwuagwu (Lagos, Nigeria) and Justin Laurenzo (Park Ridge, N.J.) each chipped in with a goal and an assist.

After Swanson's 10th-minute PK made the score 1-0, the Beavers responded with three consecutive goals in just under an eight-minute span to lead 3-1 with 10:19 to play in the opening half.  Iwuagwu and Laurenzo hooked up on Babson's first two markers, while junior Kevin Israel (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), off an assist Jimmy Stento (Needham, Mass./Needham) and Anderson, made the score 3-1. Iwuagwu, who has won back-to-back NEWMAC Offensive Player of the Week awards, has now scored in four consecutive games.

A flurry of goals ensued in the second half, as a combined four markers were scored just 3:23 apart.  Swanson's second PK at 65:17 brought the hosts to within one but just 14 seconds later Anderson's first goal pushed Babson's margin back to two.

Anderson's second tally at 66:58 came off a restart, a goal that established Babson's new points mark.  At 68:40, freshman Sanjit Basak-Smith (Easton, Conn./South Kent School) narrowed Wheaton's gap to two.  With just over 11 minutes to go, classmate Stephan Nkom (Douala, Cameroon/Indian Spring School) nearly made the score 5-4, but Babson junior Jackson Klein (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) made a huge save to keep the gap at two.

Wheaton freshman goalie Matt Dickey (Newton, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon School) finished with seven stops, while Klein turned aside a pair of Lyon shots.

Babson held advantages of 17-13 in shots and 6-4 in corner kicks.

Wheaton travels to local foe Bridgewater State University on Wednesday for a non-conference game at 3:30 p.m, while Babson, winners of six in a row, travel to face 17th-ranked Williams tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
