Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass. – UMass-Boston senior goalie Kevin Bendel (Denville, N.J.) made 37 saves in net and Babson College senior Andrew Peabody (Marblehead, Mass.) stopped 36 shots as the Beacons and Beavers skated to a 1-1 overtime tie in an ECAC East men's ice hockey matchup at the Babson Skating Center on Saturday afternoon.
With the tie, UMass-Boston is now 9-7-3 overall and 5-6-1 in conference play, while Babson moves to 6-11-2 overall and 6-4-2 in the ECAC East.
Following a scoreless first period, Babson grabbed a 1-0 lead with a short-handed goal at 6:28 of the second. After taking control in his own zone, Beavers' junior Trevor Hines (Newburyport, Mass.) fired a pass up-ice to classmate PT Donato (Arlington, Mass.), who skated in alone on Bendel and tallied his fourth goal of the season on the breakaway. Babson then threatened to double their lead later in the period, but Bendel turned away a penalty shot by junior Ryan Smith (Lynnfield, Mass.) to keep it a one-goal contest.
The Beacons knotted the score at 1-1 midway through the third period, beginning when senior Chris Wyman (Bartlett, Ill. ) dug the puck out from behind the net and fired a pass into the slot. Junior Tim Richter (Naugatuck, Conn.) then gathered it and tucked his first goal of the season inside the left post to even the contest at the 7:07 mark.
That would cap the scoring for both teams, as Peabody and Bendel kept their respective opponents off the board the rest of the way. Peabody finished with a total of 36 saves in the contest, including 13 in the third period and two more in overtime, while Bendel recorded 37 stops, with three of those coming in the extra session.
Both teams will return to action with home games next Friday. Babson welcomes Skidmore at 7 p.m. while UMass-Boston hosts Castleton State, also at 7 p.m.
