PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. -- The Babson College alpine ski teams both
turned in standout performances in the slalom portion of the
BC/Brown Carnival at Wildcat Mountain on Saturday. The women's team
recorded its best finish of the season and its best slalom finish
in over a decade, placing fifth out of 10 squads. Meanwhile, the
Babson men finished fourth overall and in doing so clinched fourth
place in the overall MacConnell Division standings. As a result,
the Beavers locked up their fourth consecutive bid to the Eastern
Collegiate Ski Conference (ECSC) Regional Championships.
The Babson women's fifth-place peformance was spearheaded by
sophomore Franny Robertson, who continued her
breakout season by placing ninth overall - the first top-10 finish
of her collegiate career. Senior captains Alexis
Vest-Burton and Alyssa Sullivan finished
back-to-back in 24th and 25th, respectively, and first-year
Jaclyn LaCavalla followed in 39th. Rounding out
the Beavers' lineup were sophomore Hilary Reis in
42nd place and first-year Sophie Komornicki in
47th.
The men were fittingly led by senior captains Max
Winthrop and Keith Vella, who each posted
top-20 finishes to help secure the team's fourth regional bid of
their spectacular careers. Winthrop placed 17th overall, while
Vella was close behind in 18th. Sophomores Ricky
Beneduci and Zach Breakstone also skied
well for the Beavers, placing 26th and 27th, respectively, while
sophomore Ryan Drake took 41st and first-year Mark
Grundy came in 51st.
Both teams will return to the slopes tomorrow morning to close
out their regular season schedule with the giant slalom
competition.
