Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass. – Senior captain Payden Benning (Estevan, Saskatchewan) recorded two goals and one assist and first-year Derek Mohney (Amherst, N.Y.) made 23 saves in net to help the visiting Curry College Colonels defeat the host Babson College Beavers, 6-2, in a non-conference men's ice hockey matchup at the Babson Skating Center on Thursday night. With their seventh straight win, the Colonels improved to 7-1 on the season, while Babson slipped to 3-7-0 with the loss.
The two teams traded goals in an evenly-played first period, beginning when Curry sophomore Brad Devereaux (Duxbury, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season off assists from first-year Chris Mason (Monrovia, Calif.) and sophomore Michael Lopez (Newton, Mass.) at 2:56. The Beavers then tied it up when first-year Andrew Bonazza (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) netted his fourth of the campaign off feeds from classmates Mike Driscoll (Milton, Mass.) and Joe DiPietro (Pembroke, Mass.) at 7:24.
Babson grabbed a brief lead early in the second, as Bonazza and sophomore Tom Callahan (Lakeville, Mass.) assisted sophomore Matt O'Neill (Norwell, Mass.) on his first goal of the year at 3:28. However, Curry would go on to score five unanswered goals over the remainder of the contest, beginning when Benning netted his first of the night off a Josh Kamrass (Norcross, Ga.) pass at 5:59. Junior Connor Hendry (Alberta, Alberta) later potted a powerplay goal from Benning and sophomore Brad Devereaux (Duxbury, Mass.) at 8:33 to give Curry a 3-2 edge after two periods, and Benning joined juniors Greg Fosso (East Meadow, N.Y.) and Casey Brugman (Winthrop, Mass.) with goals in the third period as the Colonels skated away with the 6-2 victory.
With his three-point night, Benning now boasts a team-leading 10 goals and five assists for 15 points on the year. Brugman's goal was his fifth of the winter, while Fosso's was his second and came short-handed with 4:56 left in regulation. Senior Ryan Barlock (Niles, Ill.) recorded a pair of assists in the third period of play, while Mohney made five saves in the final session to finish with 23 stops in the game.
Junior goalie Zeke Testa (Wellesley, Mass.) turned away 30 shots in net for Babson, including 13 in the second period.
