Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Mike Fisher's (Longmeadow, Mass.) goal just 2:46 into the first overtime helped the 20th-ranked Babson College men's soccer team earn a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Wheaton College this afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game in Babson Park. With the victory, the Beavers pushed their unbeaten streak to 14 games and earned their fourth consecutive NEWMAC regular season title, and seventh overall.
Fisher's goal came following early pressure by the Babson attack to start overtime. Jimmy Stento (Needham, Mass.) earned a foul along the right sideline that would later lead to a corner kick. Wheaton was able to avoid any danger on the restart, clearing the ball towards midfield, but senior Max Walker (Newton, Mass.) quickly fed Fisher streaking up the left sideline, where he did the rest, side-stepping a defender to hit a hard, low shot that beat Lyons' first-year goalkeeper David Delfino (Bourne, Mass.) inside the far post for the victory.
The Babson attack applied pressure throughout a physical first 45 minutes, and would take a 1-0 advantage just before halftime on Thomas Elbling's (Porta Alegre, Brazil) header in the 44th minute. Elbling redirected Salomon Guindi's (Mexico City, Mexico) corner from the left side to the far post from just outside the six-yard box for the first goal of his career. The goal came following one of the Beavers' best chances of the half, a Walker blast from the top of the box that Delfino had to punch over the goal.
The Beavers held a 13-3 advantage in first-half shots and junior forward Eric Anderson (Scituate, Mass.) nearly opened the scoring just over 20 minutes into the stanza but his diving shot from the penalty spot hit the crossbar and was cleared out of harm's way. Stento and Fisher also had scoring opportunities denied by Delfino.
Despite a 13-4 second half bulge in shots for the Beavers, it was Wheaton that made the most of its opportunities when senior Rory McGonigle (Los Angeles, Calif.) redirected a Luke Finklestein (Peabody, Mass.) free kick for the equalizer at 69:25. Following a foul just inside of midfield, Finklestein served a long ball from the left side of the field towards the far post and McGonigle made a great finish, beating his mark and tucking his shot past Babson goalkeeper Peter Crowley (Lexington, Mass.) and inside the far post. It was McGonigle's first goal of the season and the team-leading seventh assist of the year for Finkelstein.
The Beavers (12-2-2, 5-0-0 NEWMAC) continued to pressure Delfino and the Wheaton defense, but struggled to find the target in the closing minutes of regulation, leading to Fisher's heroics in extra-time.
Crowley made one save to earn the 55th victory of his career, tying Steve Webber '92 as the program's all-time wins leader. Delfino was strong for Wheaton all day, making seven saves.
At halftime of Saturday's game, there was a brief ceremony honoring the 20-year anniversary of Babson's 1991 men's soccer season - a year in which the Beavers won the Constitution Athletic Conference Regular Season title and advanced all the way to the Final Four of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The team finished that year with an incredible record of 18-4-1 - giving them the most victories of any team in the 56-year history of the Babson men's soccer program.
The Beavers are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host Plymouth State University at Hartwell-Rogers Field in a 2:00pm start. Wheaton College (7-7-2, 3-2-0) NEWMAC will be back in action next Thursday afternoon when they host Bridgewater State in a 3:00pm start.
