Ice Hockey Comeback Falls Just Short In 4-3 Loss To Connecticut College

BOX SCORE

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College scored twice in the final five minutes of regulation, but it wasn't enough to overcome a three-goal deficit as the Beavers fell to visiting Connecticut College, 4-3, in an ECAC East men's ice hockey matchup at the Babson Skating Center on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Camels improved to 4-4-2 overall and 4-3-0 in NESCAC play, while the Beavers dipped to 5-6-0 overall and 4-3-0 in the ECAC East.

After Babson survived more than a minute of a two-man advantage by the Camels midway through the first period, Connecticut College broke through at even strength when first-year Kevin Kelly (Harrisburg, Pa.) dug the puck out behind the Babson net and fed it back to classmate Steve Servideo (Medford, Mass.). The Camels' rookie then stuffed it past Babson junior goalie Andrew Peabody (Marblehead, Mass.) from just outside the crease for the game's first goal at 15:27. It was the first goal of Servideo's collegiate career.

The Camels doubled their advantage early in the second session, thanks to a short-handed goal by junior Michael O'Donnell (Winchester, Mass.). After freshman Adam Rimmer (Newbury, Mass.) broke it out of the Babson zone and hit him streaking up the left side, O'Donnell lifted it into the upper right corner for a breakaway goal – his second tally of the season – at 1:57. Connecticut College then made it 3-0 at 11:07 of the same period, as senior Joe Capuano (Melrose, Mass.) converted a Keith Veronesi (South Glastonbury, Conn.) feed for his first goal of the year.

Babson got on the board late in the second, as sophomore PT Donato (Arlington, Mass.) won a faceoff in the left circle of the Camel's zone and put a quick shot on net. Connecticut College junior goaltender Andrew Margolin (Mahwah, N.J.) made the initial stop, but the rebound kicked out to freshman Matt O'Neill (Norwell, Mass.), who potted his second goal of the season into an open net to make it 3-1 at 17:21.

Things stayed that way until the 7:27 mark of the third, when Capuano converted yet another breakaway for his second goal of the game and a 4-1 Camels lead. Babson still trailed by the same margin with five minutes remaining, but O'Neill gave the Beavers' life when he scored his second of the game and third of the winter off a breakaway feed from sophomore Matt Leer (Edina, Minn.) at 15:07.

Following a Connecticut College penalty, Babson coach Jamie Rice '90 pulled Peabody for a two-skater advantage and it paid off moments later when junior Dan Ahern (Melrose, Mass.) scored his second goal of the season on a powerplay to make it 4-3 at 17:38. Peabody would return briefly before departing for the final 2:05, but despite the Beavers' extra attacker the Camels defense would allow just one shot the rest of the way. Margolin made a kick save on first-year Ryan Heavey's (Andover, Mass.) bid from the left point in the final minute as Connecticut College held on for the 4-3 road victory.

After getting outshot, 11-5, in the opening period, Babson poured it on in the final 40 minutes, mounting 34 shots to the Camels' 12. However, Margolin was equal to the task, finishing with 36 saves to earn his fourth win of the year. Peabody finished with 19 stops between the pipes for the Beavers, as he lost for just the second time this season.
