ANDOVER, N.H. – First-year Mark Grundy
(Cumberland, R.I.) posted his fifth top-10 finish of the
season to help the Babson College men's ski team move one
step closer to yet another ECSC Regional Championship bid on
Saturday, as the Beavers finished fourth in the slalom competition
at the Smith Carnival at Blackwater. Meanwhile, the women's
team took seventh place overall in their half of the race thanks to
another top-20 effort by sophomore Franny Robertson
(Douglas, Wyo.).
Grundy continued his exceptional freshman campaign with another
strong outing on Saturday, finishing sixth overall with a combined
time of 1:27.31. He was followed by senior captain Max
Winthrop (Avon, Conn.) in 20th place and sophomore
Zach Breakstone (Sparta, N.J.) in 22nd to round
out the Beavers' “A” squad scorers. Senior
captain Keith Vella (Sussex, N.J.) added a
23rd-place effort and junior Greg LaFrance (Brookline,
N.H.) came in 25th. Babson also raced a “B”
team which placed 13th at the event, as sophomore Ricky
Beneduci (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) finished 39th, senior
Scott Kern (Basking Ridge, N.J.) came in 42nd, and
sophomore Ryan Drake (West Simsbury, Conn.) placed
45th.
Robertson turned in another outstanding performance on Saturday,
as she placed 19th with a combined time of 1:36.12 – her
fifth top-20 effort in her last six races. Senior captains
Alexis Vest-Burton (Salt Lake City, Utah) and
Alyssa Sullivan (Tiverton, R.I.) followed in 31st
and 36th place, respectively, while sophomore Hillary Reis
(Bethel, Maine) came in 47th overall. Rounding out the
ladies' lineup were junior Jaclyn LaCavalla (New
City, N.Y.), who finished 62nd, and first-year
Sophie Komornicki (Naperville, Ill.), who took
64th.
The Babson men now head into the final weekend of regular season
competition in firm control of fourth place in the MacConnell
Division, while the women's team currently stands in seventh
place overall.
