BABSON PARK, Mass. – Eastern Connecticut State scored
twice in the first half and then added a key insurance goal in the
second to claim a 3-2 victory over host Babson College in the
championship game of the 2010 Babson Fall Classic at
Hartwell-Rogers Field on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the
Warriors improved to 2-1-0 on the season, while the Beavers
suffered their first loss to fall to 2-1-0.
Babson grabbed an early lead when sophomore Eric Anderson
(Scituate, Mass.) sent the ball to junior captain
Max Walker (Newton, Mass.) in the right corner.
Walker then sent a cross into the box, where junior Jimmy
Stento (Needham, Mass.) headed a shot into the upper right
corner for the game's first goal at 17:39.
Eastern Connecticut State answered with a pair of goals in a
six-minute span, both coming off restarts after Babson fouls just
outside the box on the right side. On the first, junior Aaron
Smiles (Bedford, Mass.) sent a free kick to the far side, where
junior Matt Furman (Montville, Conn.) headed the ball back to the
near side post. There, sophomore Cory Tobler (Portland, Conn.)
easily blasted it over the goal line to even the contest at
20:06.
Six minutes later, another foul gave the Warriors another free kick
at nearly the same spot. Smiles again hit a perfect service, this
time to the center of the box where first-year Luke Capezzone
(Colchester, Conn.) one-timed it inside the right post to give
Eastern Connecticut a 2-1 lead at 26:07.
Eastern Connecticut State scored what would prove to be the
decisive goal in the 68th minute, as a perfect through-ball by
sophomore Jon DeCasanova (Glastonbury, Conn.) sent Thurman in all
alone on Babson junior keeper Peter Crowley (Lexington,
Mass.). The junior forward then tucked it past the
charging goalie and inside the right post to give the visitors a
3-1 lead at 67:22.
Babson pulled back to within one at 70:32, as freshman Mike
Fisher (Longmeadow, Mass.) headed a chip from junior back
Derek Foy (East Bridgewater, Mass.) into the upper
right corner for his first collegiate goal. However, Warriors'
junior Carl Appel (West Windsor, N.J.) would make his seventh and
final save on Babson's only shot on net in the final 20 minutes as
Eastern Connecticut State finished off the 3-2 win.
