BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's
and women's tennis teams both earned convincing victories
over host Babson College on Thursday. The Brandeis women, ranked
28th in the nation, defeated the Beavers by a score of 8-1, while
the men's team topped Babson, 9-0.
Babson (7-6) picked up its lone point in the women's match
at number one doubles, where the tandem of senior captain
Jes Huang (Andover, Mass.) and sophomore
Rebecca Stone (Dover, Mass.) edged the
Judges' top duo of first-year Faith Broderick
(Washingtonville, N.Y.) and junior Rachel Rosman (Bonita Springs,
Fla.), 9-7. However, Brandeis (6-5) took the remaining two doubles
contests and all six singles matches, including a a 6-3, 6-0 win by
Broderick at one and a 6-1, 6-1 triumph by Rosmon at two, to run
away with the 8-1 victory.
In the men's match, Brandeis (6-6) jumped out to an
immediate 3-0 lead thanks to a sweep of doubles play. The Judges
then took all six singles contests, including matching 6-1, 6-0
wins by juniors Nick White (Wellesley, Mass.) and Simon Miller
(Plantation, Fla.) at number one and two, respectively. Babson
(3-8) senior captain Brian Lafayette (Burlington,
Vt.) and first-year Simeon Human both put
up strong fights in the opening set of their matches, but Lafayette
eventually fell to Brandeis first-year Steven Milo (Woodbury,
N.Y.), 7-5, 6-0, at four and Human lost to sophomore Mike Tatarski
(Wayne, N.J.) at six.
