PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. -- The Babson alpine ski teams wrapped up
their regular season at Wildcat this weekend, where the men
finished fourth overall in both the slalom and GS while the women
placed sixth in both races. As a result, the men's team finished
fourth in the MacConnell Division to secure their seventh ECSC
Regional Championship bid in the last eight years, while the women
overcame four straight ninth-place finishes to start the season to
finish in eight place in the league standings.
The weekend featured four career-best finishes by the Beavers,
as well as two more season bests. In Saturday's slalom event,
juniors Max Winthrop and Keith
Vella both placed in the top 10 to pace the men, as
Winthrop matched his career-best with a seventh-place finish and
Vella added a career-best ninth-place effort. Senior co-captains
Chris Jacobs and Connor Lemenze
finished 22nd and 23rd, respectively, while first-year Zach
Breakstone turned in the best race of his young career by
placing 25th.
On the women's side, first-year Franny
Robertson broke into the top 20 for the first time in her
career, placing 19th in the slalom. Junior co-captain
Alexis Burton followed in 25th and fellow junior
co-captain Alyssa Sullivan came in 30th.
On Sunday, Vella led the Babson men by finishing 11th overall in
the giant slalom - his seventh consectuive top-20 finish and his
eighth in 10 races this season. Lemenze added a career-best
16th-place performance, while Jacobs finished off his best weekend
of the season with a 21st-place effort - his best finish of 2010.
Burton matched her best finish of the season by placing 12th
overall in the GS, followed by Sullivan in 22nd and Robertson in
27th.
Babson placed eight skiers in the final MacConnell Division
individual standings. Winthrop led the men's team by placing 12th
overall, while Vella finished 16th. It was the Beavers' best 1-2
finish in the league standings since Carson Thurber and Morgen
Newman back in 2006. Also ranking in the top 45 for the men were
Lemenze in 27th, Jacobs in 37th, and Breakstone in 43rd.
For the Babson women, Burton finished 28th in the overall league
standings, with Sullivan finishing 37th and Robertson placing 40th.
