BOX SCORE
NORTON, Mass.- The Babson College men's soccer team earned
their fourth straight win over Wheaton College and third by a
single goal during Saturday's key New England Women's and Men's
Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match, as the Lyons fell to the
Beavers by a 2-1 count in overtime during a battle between
regionally-ranked teams on Keefe Field.
Ranked sixth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA), Wheaton, dropped its second
consecutive game to fall to 9-5-2 overall and 3-2 in league play,
while fifth-ranked Babson improved to 10-3-2 and 3-0-2.
Neither team found the back of the net until the Beavers broke the
stalemate in the 80th minute, which was the start of a three-goal
spurt during a 16:56 span. Lyon sophomore Max Swanson
(Lexington, Mass.) knotted the game at one at 83:16 courtesy of
classmate David Turina's (North Yarmouth, Maine) corner kick, while
senior goalie Chris Smart (Brookfield, Conn.) finished with two
stops.
Babson sophomore Eric Anderson (Scituate, Mass.)
scored the 80th-minute marker before assisting classmate
Joshua Danesh (Brookline, Mass.) on the
game-winner just over six minutes into the first overtime period.
Junior keeper Peter Crowley (Lexington, Mass.)
came up with a number of big second-half saves in the victory,
finishing with seven.
On the visitors' first goal, Beaver senior Ben Meyerson's
(South Nyack, N.Y.) serve found Anderson in the box, as
Anderson managed to get his head on the ball before Smart could get
to it. Prior to Wheaton's tying tally, Swanson had
back-to-back headers from point-blank range denied by Crowley
midway through the second half.
With the win, Babson clinches a first round bye in the NEWMAC
Championship tournament and is guaranteed a top three seeding. The
Beavers will visit Plymouth State University tomorrow afternoon for
a 1pm non-conference game and will finish out NEWMAC play next
Saturday with a road game against Clark University.
