WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. -- The Babson College alpine ski teams
turned enjoyed a magnificent weekend at the Plymouth State
University Carnival at Waterville Valley, including the women's
best finish in more than a decade. The men's team further
solidified their position as one of the top teams in the MacConnell
Division by placing third overall in Saturday's slalom and fourth
in Sunday's GS, while the women placed eighth in the slalom and
then took fifth in the GS - the program's best finish since 1998.
The Babson men were once again led by junior Max
Winthrop (Avon, Conn.), who for the third consecutive week
turned in a career-best finish. On Saturday, Winthrop set a new
personal best by placing seventh overall in the slalom - the second
week in a row he has cracked the top ten. He was one of three
Beavers to finish in the top 20, as junior Keith Vella
(Sussex, N.J.) placed 10th and senior Connor
Lemenze (Stratton Mountain, Vt.) followed in 17th. Senior
Chris Jacobs (Rochester, N.Y.) and first-year
Ricky Beneduci (Hasbrouck heights, N.J.) also
skied well for Babson, finishing 25th and 28th, respectively.
Winthrop led the Beavers again in Sunday's GS, placing ninth
overall. Vella came in 20th and Lemenze 22nd, while Jacobs checked
in at 37th and first-year Zach Breakstone (Sparta,
N.J.) followed in 29th.
With only three skiers on its roster, the women's team needed
standout performances from all three - junior captains
Alexis Burton (Salt Lake City, Utah) and
Alyssa Sullivan (Tiverton, R.I.) and first-year
Franny Robertson (Douglas, Wyo.) - to post its
best weekend in 12 years. On saturday, Sullivan placed 26th, Burton
came in 31st, and Robertson finished 45th at the team moved up to
eighth place for the first time this winter. That set the stage for
the group's fantastic GS performance on Sunday, as Burton placed
18th, Sullivan followed in 21st, and Robertson placed a career-best
27th to help Babson finished fifth overall.
With two carnivals and four races remaining in the regular
season, the Babson men now have a firm grip on fourth place in the
divsion. The Babson women remain in ninth place, but they are now
just one point behind eighth-place UConn.
