BOX
SCORE
BABSON PARK, Mass. - Senior midfielder Chris Bourdeau (Thompson,
Conn.) scored the game's only goal off a corner kick in the 55th
minute and first-year Jordan Munsell (Waterford, Conn.) made two
enormous saves late in the game as the Eastern Connecticut State
University Warriors defeated host Babson College, 1-0, to win the
2009 Babson Soccer Classic Championship on Sunday afternoon. With
the win, ECSU improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Beavers
slipped to 1-2 overall.
After a scoreless first half that saw both teams fire shots off
the post, Babson nearly took the lead when sophomore Max
Walker (Newton, Mass.) hit the crossbar at 40:51. ECSU
then earned a corner kick at the other end of the field, and a
defensive miscommunication in the box allowed Bourdeau's low entry
kick to trickle in at 54:36.
Babson had two great chances to tie the game, but Munsell came
up with a pair of magnificent saves to keep his team in front. The
first came on a diving stop that pushed Beavers' first-year
Eric Anderson's (Scituate, Mass.) header just wide
of the left post at 73:29, and the second came on a nearly
identical stop after senior Chris Morris (Shoreline,
Wash.) headed a shot toward the lower left corner off a
cross from classmate Dan Fogarty (Brookline, N.H.)
at 85:25.
The Beavers would have one final chance when a long serve
cleared the ECSU defense with just under 10 seconds remaining, but
the ball landed just out of the reach of senior captain
Sean Gleason (Clinton, N.Y.) in the box. Munsell
was there to easily corral it and moments later time expired to
seal the Warriors' 1-0 victory.
Munsell finished with four saves in net for ECSU, while
sophomore Ian Siekman (Bethel, Maine) stopped four
shots in goal for Babson.
