Rutland, VT - The second-seeded Castleton State College Spartans
fell to seventh-seeded Babson College Beavers in the quarterfinal
round of the ECAC Division III Men's East Tournament at the
Rutland Regional Fieldhouse Saturday evening.
After a scoreless first period, Babson junior Jason
Schneider (Littleton, Mass.) netted an
unassisted goal to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead 11:12 into the
second period. Castleton freshman, Cody Ayers potted the equalizer
just 1:48 into the third period off assists from Omar Pacha and
Stuart Stefan, but the Beavers were able to tally three unanswered
goals to complete the upset.
Junior Casey Fazekas (Montreal, Quebec) scored
what proved to be the game winner with 14:17 remaining in the
contest as junior Chris Wood (Medford, Mass.) and
first-year Sean Roche (Franklin,
Mass.) provided helpers. Sophomore Terry
Woods (Duxbury, Mass.) sent home an insurance tally
with less than five minutes remaining, followed by an empty-net
goal from senior captain Brad Baldelli (Northboro,
Mass.) with 27 seconds left.
First-year goalkeeper Andrew Peabody (Marblehead,
Mass.) earned the win, stopping 27 shots while
Castleton's Jay Seals stopped 22 in the loss.
The loss snaps Castleton's seven game win-streak, and ends the
Spartans' season at 15-9-2. Babson improves to 11-13-1 and advances
to the semifinal round, versus Skidmore College. Fourth-seeded New
England College will play host to the Semifinal and Final rounds on
Friday and Saturday, after a wild quarterfinal round that saw the
top three seeds (#1 Norwich, #2 Castleton and #3 Salem State) all
fall.
