BABSON PARK, Mass. - Babson College scored a key shorthanded
goal while allowing just three shots during a pivotal Connecticut
College powerplay in the third period as the Beavers claimed a 5-2
victory over the Camels in an ECAC East/NESCAC matchup at the
Babson Skating Center on Friday night. With the win, Babson
improved to 10-12-1 overall and 9-9-0 in the ECAC East, while
Connecticut College dipped to 12-8-3 overall and 8-7-3 in the
NESCAC.
Junior Jason Schneider (Littleton, Mass.)
scored two goals in the win - both of which came in the third
period - while first-year goalie Andrew Peabody
(Marblehead, Mass.) made 20 saves in net for Babson.
The Beavers held a 4-2 lead and had 26 seconds remaining on
their own man-advantage when a major penalty gave Connecticut
College more than four minutes of powerplay time with nine minutes
remaining in the third. However, after senior Matt
Harrington (Hanover, Mass.) chipped the puck out of the
Babson zone along the left boards, Schneider ran it down and lifted
a breakaway shorthanded goal over junior goalie Greg Parker
(Trenton, Ontario) on the blocker side to give the hosts a 5-2
cushion with 8:04 left to play. Another Babson penalty then gave
the Camels a two-man advantage, but the unflappable Beavers'
penalty kill unit allowed just one shot on net - a long wrister
from the point - over the next two minutes. Babson eventually
killed off the remainder of the major penalty as well, allowing
just three total shots during the 4:32 powerplay, to hold on for
the 5-2 win.
Babson opened the scoring less than two minutes into the
contest, as junior Shane Farrell (West Warwick,
R.I.) fired a pass from deep in the right corner into the
slot, where senior Pat McLaughlin (Berlin, Mass.)
tipped it inside the far left post for the game's first goal.
Connecticut College answered a minute and a half later, when junior
Brett Moore (Medfield, Mass.) scored from the slot on a
rebound of first-year Julien Boutet's (Amos, Quebec) shot at 3:21.
The Beavers took the lead for good at 4:43 of the first, when
senior co-captain Nick Jones (Melrose, Mass.)
fired a shot from the right point that was redirected into the
lower right corner by junior Chris Sabo (Wellesley,
Mass.). The score would remain 2-1 until midway through
the second, when junior Chris Wood (Medford,
Mass.) scored off rebounds from consecutive shots by
senior Alex DiPietro (Winthrop, Mass.) and
sophomore Terry Woods (Duxbury, Mass.) at 10:28 to
give Babson a 3-1 advantage.
Schneider netted the first of his two goals on a powerplay to
make it 4-1 at 3:45 of the third period, as he took a nice
cross-ice pass from junior Casey Fazekas (Montreal,
Quebec) down the right side and beat Parker low on the
blocker side with a shot from the right circle. Connecticut College
would cut the lead back to two when sophomore Ryan Riffe (South
Berwick, Maine) converted a nice centering pass from senior Robbie
Tesar (Lake Bluff, Ill.) at 5:32, but Schneider would net his
second goal of the night and eighth of the season shorthanded
during the Camels' lengthy but fruitless powerplay as Babson came
away with the 5-2 victory.
Parker played all but 55 seconds in net for Connecticut College,
finishing with 35 saves.
