BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's soccer team played
a near-perfect match to take a 3-0 decision over Babson in a battle
of regionally-ranked squads on Sunday afternoon. The Polar Bears,
ranked seventh in New England, improve to 8-3-1 while the Beavers,
standing ninth in the regional poll, drop to 10-5-1.
Bowdoin controlled the pace of play from the opening whistle and
got a pair of early goals from Eddie Jones within the first nine
minutes. The goals, nearly identical in nature, were both off
crosses served by Nick Powell to the boot of Jones, who netted the
tallies into the top corner of the net just 34 seconds apart, at
8:19 and 8:53. Powell then added a goal of his own in the 31st
minute, accepting a pass from Macgill Eldredge, eluding one
defender and drilling a low shot inside the right post.
The Beavers had a chance to break the shutout, but were denied
when Polar Bear defender Sean Bishop stepped in front of a shot by
Babson's Dan Fogarty in the 87th minute. Dan Hicks
needed just one save in net for Bowdoin, who out-shot Babson 15-5.
Peter Crowley made six saves between the pipes for
the Beavers in the setback.
The blank sheet is the eighth shutout of the year for the Polar
Bears and snaps a three-game winning streak for the Beavers. Babson
had not been blanked since September 6 in a 1-0 defeat to Eastern
Connecticut.
