NEWBURY, N.H. -- The Babson College alpine ski teams opened
their 2009 seasons with back-to-back giant slalom races at the
Colby-Sawyer Carnival at Mount Sunapee this weekend. The men's team
placed fifth on Friday and fourth on Saturday to earn a
fourth-place position in the current MacConnell Division standings,
while the women stood in eighth place after finishing eighth on
Friday and seventh on Saturday.
On Friday, senior co-captain Kevin Fusick (North Granby,
Conn.) paced the men's squad with a 19th-place effort,
followed closely by junior Chris Jacobs (Rochester,
N.Y.) with a career-best 20th-place performance. Sophomore
Max Winthrop (Avon, Conn.) came in 30th for the
Beavers, followed by sophomore Keith Vella (Sussex,
N.J.) in 34th and junior Connor Lemenze (Stratton
Mountain, Vt.) in 35th. Rounding out the lineup were
senior co-captain John Roche (Hingham, Mass.) in
41st, first-year Greg LaFrance (Brookline, N.H.)
in 48th, and sophomore Enrico Palmerino (West Brookfield,
Mass.) in 62nd.
Sophomore Alexis Vest-Burton (Salt Lake City,
Utah) led Babson with a 20th-place finish on Friday,
followed by classmate Alyssa Sullivan (Tiverton,
R.I.) in 29th. Junior Tahira Adatia (Tacoma,
Wash.) posted the Beavers final time, placing 63rd.
On Saturday, Jacobs and Vella paced the Beavers with career-best
performances. Jacobs placed 16th overall with a combined time of
1:46.10, while Vella was close behind in 19th with a total time of
1:46.87. They were joined in the top 25 by a host of teammates, as
Winthrop finished 23rd, Fusick came in 24th, and Lemenze placed
25th. LaFrance added a 33rd-place effort for the Beavers, and Roche
bounced back from a tough first run to place 52nd.
On the women's side, Vest-Burton led Babson with an outstanding
17th-place peformance on Saturday, finishing with a combined time
of 1:51.55. She was followed by Sullivan in 27th place and Adatia
in 62nd.
