WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Babson College men's ice hockey team
moutned a commanding 36-19 shot advantage but still came up on the
short end of a 3-2 decision in an ECAC East/NESCAC matchup at Colby
College on Saturday afternoon. The Beavers fell to 0-2-0 (0-2-0
ECAC East) with the loss, while the White Mules remained unbeaten
at 2-0-0 (2-0-0 NESCAC).
Colby jumped in front with two powerplay goals in the first period,
as Dan Nelson scored at 12:50 and Mike White made it 2-0 less than
three minutes later. Babson got one goal back when senior
co-captain Brad Baldelli (Northboro, Mass.) scored
off assists from first-year Mike Hoban (Medfield,
Mass.) and senior Pat McLaughlin (Berlin,
Mass.) at 18:20 of the first, and senior JT Balben
(Wayland, Mass.) evened the game with a powerplay goal off
a feed from junior Jason Schneider (Littleton,
Mass.) at 9:46 of the second.
The White Mules regained the lead late in the second period, as
Nelson scored his second of the game with 1:06 left. Colby then
withstood a furious third-period assault by the Beavers, who
outshot the hosts 12-6 in the final session. However, Mules' goalie
Cody McKinney was equal to the task, stopping all 12 shots en route
to a 34-save performance as Colby held on for the 3-2 victory.
First-year Andrew Peabody (Mablehead, Mass.)
played all but 1:20 in his collegiate debut in net for Babson,
finishing with 16 saves.
