NORTON, Mass.-The Babson College men's soccer team defeated
nationally-ranked Wheaton College, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in a New
England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at
Keefe Field on the Wheaton campus.
The Lyons entered today's contest ranked 25th nationally and
fourth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of
America (NSCAA). The Beavers are also among the top in the region
at number seven. With the loss the Lyons slip to 7-3-2 overall and
1-2 in league play. The Beavers improve to 9-4-1 and 2-0-1.
Babson senior Shane Fogarty (Rye, N.H.) struck
first just 8:01 into play, taking a feed from classmate Tim
Winn (Sutton, Mass.) before placing his shot just beneath
the crossbar on the right side. A trio of Wheaton sophomores
combined efforts to knot the score at 20:44, with Josh Solomon
(Acton, Mass.) scoring from the middle of the box off consecutive
passes from David Ferriero (Medway, Mass.) and Jake Wagner
(Sudbury, Mass.).
The Beavers took the lead in the 26th minute, as Winn got the ball
to sophomore Dan Hixon (Foxboro, Mass.) who then
found freshman Billy Nickerson (Middleton, Mass.)
for a 2-1 edge.
Babson had a pair of early second-half chances turned aside by
Wheaton sophomore goalie Chris Smart (Brookfield, Conn.) before
eventually breaking through at 58:17. Freshmen Max
Walker (Newton, Mass.) found open space in the middle of
the field, dribbled through the Wheaton defense and finished his
shot to the lower left corner of the net for the 3-1 advantage.
Beaver freshman Peter Crowley (Lexington, Mass.)
collected the win after posting two saves. Smart was credited
with three stops in the second half for the Lyons, while sophomore
Cole Davidson (Needham, Mass.) had one first-half save.
Babson held a 13-10 edge in shots, and each team took nine corner
kicks.
The Beavers visit Roger Williams on Thursday in a non-conference
match up at 3:30 pm. The Lyons return home Monday against
non-conference opponent Johnson & Wales University at 1:00 p.m.
