Baseball Topples Eastern Connecticut State, 4-2

April 9, 2007

Box Score

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - Junior Jeff Musante pitched seven strong innings to earn the win and sophomore Chris Legrow went the final two for his first career save as Babson College defeated host Eastern Connecticut State University, 4-2, in a non-conference baseball game on Monday afternoon. The Beavers improved to 12-8 with their fifth win in their last five games, while the Warriors fell to 13-7.

Babson built a 3-0 lead with single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Senior tri-captain Ryan Campbell drove in junior Matt Delaney with a sacrifice fly for the Beavers' first run after Delaney had led off the fourth with a double and moved to third on a single by sophomore Jeff Wojnar. Babson then added another run the following inning when Wojnar knocked in first-year Brian Scanlon with a single to right, and first-year Peter O'Toole scored the team's third run in the sixth when he singled, moved to second on a hit batsman, took third on a walk, and scored on a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of junior Steve Tahmoush.

Eastern Connecticut finally pushed a run across against Musante in the bottom of the seventh, but the Beavers answered in the top of the ninth when senior tri-captain Billy Schmitt reached on an error and scored all the way from first on a double to center by Tahmoush. The Warriors then put the leadoff batter on in the ninth to chase Musante, and that runner eventually came around to score to make it 4-2. However, LeGrow would get toss a scoreless ninth to earn the save as Babson came away with the two-run victory.

In seven innings of work, Musante gave up just two runs on five hits, walked four and struck out two as he evened his season record at 1-1. Legrow went the final two innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.

Wojnar went 3-for-5 with an RBI to pace the Beavers' offense, while Scanlon went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Tahmoush drove in a pair for Babson while also extending his hitting streak to seven games.

The Beavers return to action on Tuesday with a huge road game with NEWMAC rival Wheaton.
