LIGONIER, Pa.—Senior
Jack Berry (Western Springs, Ill.) fired an even-par 72 in the second round to help the 20th-ranked Babson College men's golf finish the day in 11th place after 36 holes of The Tartan Invitational on Monday at Laurel Valley Golf Club.
The Beavers shot 300-299 to finish the day at 23-over in a field that features 14 teams currently ranked in the Bushnell Golfweek Top 25. No. 3 Emory posted the low round of the day (284) and is in the lead at even-par 576, which is 11 shots clear of No. 2 Kenyon (587). No. 7 Sewanee (589), 21st-ranked John Carroll (590) and No. 6 Carnegie Mellon (591) round out the top five on jam-packed leaderboard that has second through 11th place separated by just 12 strokes.
Berry's day started ominously as he played his first eight holes in 7-over before making three birdies over the final six holes of his first round to finish with a 4-over 76. Starting round two on the 13th hole, he birdied Nos. 14, 16 and 18 to get back to 1-over for the tournament and despite three late bogeys, Berry finished with a 72 and is tied for 19th place at 4-over through 36 holes.
First-year
Jay Sherwood (Duxbury, Mass.) also got off to a slow start and was 5-over through 11 holes in the opening round before carding three birdies, which includes his final hole, the 571-yard par-5 11th, to shoot a 75 in the morning. He made two bogeys and a double over the first eight holes of round two before rallying to make back-to-back birdies on Nos. 6 and 7 and his second of the day on the 11th hole to finish with a 1-over 73 that has him tied for 19th place alongside Berry at 4-over 148.
Junior
Aman Vantipalli (Alpharetta, Ga.) tied Berry with a team-high seven birdies on the day and carded back-to-back rounds of 75 to end the day in a tie for 32nd position at 6-over 150. He was 5-over through 14 holes in round one before closing with birdies at Nos. 11 and 13 and snapped a run of three consecutive bogeys with his second birdie of the day at the par-4 13th hole.
Sophomore
Mason Malouf (Boston, Mass.) bounced back from an 87 in round one with a 7-over 79 in the afternoon that included three birdies, while classmate
Luke Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) was forced to withdraw after shooting a 2-over 74 in the opening round that included two birdies and four bogeys.
Babson begins final round play at Laurel Valley Golf Club at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
