Caroline DiGiovanni scored two goals apiece and Evans registered her 100th career point as top-seeded and seventh-ranked Babson registered a 5-0 victory over fourth-seeded Wellesley in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament semifinal on November 7, 2024 at MacDowell Field.
• Evans added an assist to her output and
Sophie Croci M'25 also scored for the Beavers.
Andrea Marguerite '24 M'25 tallied a pair of assists, and
Ellie Powers '25 and
Katie Guden M'25 added one helper each in the victory.
• Sophomore goalie Hannah Simmonds made three saves in the first half in the setback, and defender Sara Maniscalco '25 made a defensive save as well.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
• No. 6 Babson (5-1, 0-0 NEWMAC) is coming off a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory over No. 7 Tufts on Wednesday evening at MacDowell Field in a battle of top-10 teams.
• DiGiovanni scored on a breakaway eight minutes and 40 seconds into overtime for the Beavers. Sophomore
Penny Baroni also scored for the Green and White and junior
Grace Mullaney recorded an assist on the game-winner. First-year
Madison Tibbals was outstanding in goal and finished with seven saves, including three in overtime.
• DiGiovanni (6-0-12) has at least one goal in five of the six games this fall and Baroni (5-2-12) is 3-for-3 on penalty strokes. Senior
Alex Michelotti (1-1-3) and sophomore
Charlotte Roe (1-1-3) are tied for third on the team in scoring and are two of five players with one goal.
• Tibbals (1.52 GAA, 32 saves) has won four of her first five career starts with one shutout.
SCOUTING THE BLUE
• Wellesley (1-4, 0-0 NEWMAC) is looking to bounce back from a 3-0 setback at No. 17 Bowdoin Wednesday evening in Brunswick, Maine.
• First-year Katelyn Hurt earned a trio of saves in 30 minutes of action for the Blue, which suffered its third loss to a ranked team this season. Simmonds didn't allow a goal in the second half and stopped five shots.
• Sophomore Annika Schermerhorn (3-1-7) tallied two goals and an assist last Saturday in the Blue's 3-0 win over Bridgewater State, and junior Alex Butulis scored once in the victory. Senior Ceci Miller, sophomore Gabi Chen, and first-year Nicola Murungi have one assist apiece.
• The Blue have split goaltending duties with Hurt (2.50 GAA, 16 svs.) and Simmonds (3.00 GAA, 23 svs.) starting two games each and sophomore Maddie Miller (0.00 GAA, 1 sv.) earning the win in her only start.
NEWMAC DOMINANCE
• The Beavers have won nine consecutive NEWMAC regular season titles since 2015 and have captured four straight tournament championships since 2021.
• Babson has won 68 consecutive NEWMAC regular season games over the last 10 years. The last regular season loss was a 1-0 verdict at Mount Holyoke on October 17, 2015.
• The Beavers have captured 42 straight contests against NEWMAC opponents, including the conference tournament, since the start of the 2021 campaign. The last setback was a 3-2 overtime loss to MIT in the 2019 NEWMAC title game.
• The Green and White have won 35 straight NEWMAC road games (last loss was 1-0 at Mount Holyoke on 10/17/15).
NEWMAC PRESEASON POLL
• The Beavers were picked to defend their NEWMAC title when the preseason coaches' poll was released in August, receiving nine out of 10 first-place votes.
• Wellesley, which advanced to the NEWMAC Tournament semifinals last season, finished fourth in this year's preseason poll.
BEAVER BITES
• The Green and White are 4-0 in one goal games this season and have won 11 of the last 15 games since 2023 in games decided by one goal.
• The goal for DiGiovanni against Tufts was the 40th of her career, which ranks 12th in program history.
• The five goals for Baroni this season matches her total from last year when she was the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year and her 12 points surpasses last year's total of 11 points.
• DiGiovanni and Baroni have accounted for 11 of the Beavers' 16 goals this season.
