Babson Places Five Men on College Sports Communicators Academic All-District At-Large Team

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Five student-athletes from three different programs were recognized for their success in the classroom when the College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced its men's Academic All-District At-Large teams on Tuesday afternoon.

Men's lacrosse junior Bennett Smith (Lake Oswego, Ore.) was honored for the second year in a row, while teammates Will Reading (Southlake, Texas) and Seamus Rooney (Bay Shore, N.Y.), men's ice hockey junior Will Holland (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore Jack Berry (Western Springs, Ill.) from men's golf were all named to the CSC Academic All-District At-Large team for the first time in their respective careers.

The at-large program recognizes the top student-athletes from the sports of beach volleyball, bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, men's volleyball, water polo and wrestling.

Smith earned a spot on the All-New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) second team for the second consecutive season after finishing fourth on the team in scoring with 19 goals and 15 assists for 34 points in 20 games this spring. He scored five man-up goals while also contributing 30 ground balls and eight caused turnovers on the year, and has produced 52 goals and 75 assists for 127 points in 58 career games.

Smith, who helped the Beavers claim their second straight NEWMAC Tournament championship, ranks sixth in program history in assists and 15th in points.

Berry put together a breakout sophomore campaign that included earning Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) PING Region I honors after posting a 75.06 stroke average in 17 rounds. He recorded one top-10 and four top-30 finishes in seven events, and carded the low round of his career, a bogey-free 67 that included five birdies in the second round of the Cochran Collegiate on April 14 in Memphis, Tenn.

In 24 career rounds over his first two seasons at Babson, Berry owns a 75.38 stroke average.

Holland was one of two Babson defensemen to appear in all 26 games while producing two goals and five assists for seven points. He scored the go-ahead goal at 15:38 of the third period in a late-season win at UMass Boston and helped the Beavers hold seven of their final nine opponents to two goals or less.

A two-time New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) Academic All-Conference selection, Holland has appeared in 78 of 79 games over his first three seasons while contributing seven goals and 20 assists for 27 points.

An All-NEWMAC second-team selection, Reading put together the best season of his career winning 218-of-399 face-offs (.546) while setting a new career high with 104 ground balls in 20 games. He won over 60 percent of his face-offs and scored three of his six goals on the year in four postseason games as the Beavers captured their second consecutive conference title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to becoming just the eighth player in single-season program history to collect more than 100 ground balls, Reading's 218 face-off wins are the second highest single-season total in Babson history.

The 2024 NEWMAC Rookie of the Year, Rooney earned all-league first-team honors this past spring after leading the Beavers in scoring with 35 goals and 28 assists for 63 points. He produced at least one point in all 20 games and matched his career high with eight points on three goals and five assists in the Beavers' NCAA Tournament first round win over Western Connecticut State.

Despite having his rookie campaign cut short due to injury, Rooney has 66 goals and 39 assists for 105 points in 34 career games.

Since 1952, CSC (formerly CoSIDA) has honored more than 20,000 outstanding student-athletes across the NCAA. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve and maintain a GPA of 3.50 on a 4.0 scale.
