MEDFORD, Mass.—Sophomores
Sebastian Mendoza (Weston, Fla.) and
Edward Wang (Burr Ridge, Ill.) made history on Sunday afternoon by claiming Babson College's first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Championships doubles title on Sunday afternoon.
The second-seeded duo of Mendoza and Wang defeated Kiran Garapati and Simon Catanzaro of Bowdoin 8-6 in the semifinals on Sunday morning before coming from behind to edge fifth-seeded Nicholas Cehn and Simon Volkem of Williams in the final, 3-6, 7-5, 12-10. The Beavers' duo trailed 9-7 in the third-set breaker but fought off two match points by the Ephs.
With the victory, Mendoza and Wang become the program's first ITA All-America selections in doubles in addition to earning a spot at the ITA Cup in Rome, Ga., on October 16-19. Sunday's championship also was the second in as many years for Wang, who won the ITA New England B draw singles title last season.
Senior
Alexander Merson (Palisades Park, N.J.) also competed for the Beavers on Sunday but saw his run in the A singles draw come to an end with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to top-seeded Mark Kneiss of Bowdoin. The fifth-seeded Merson won a pair of singles matches on both Friday and Saturday to become the first Babson singles player in school history to advance to the semifinals.
Mendoza and Wang will begin play at the ITA Cup on Thursday, October 16, while the rest of the Beavers will get the spring portion of their schedule underway in February.
