Softball Closes Out Regular Season Against Clark and WPI at Alumni Field

WHAT TO KNOW

•    Babson will conclude the regular season with a pair of home doubleheaders at Alumni Field. 
•    The Beavers host Clark on Friday and will meet WPI in a twin bill on Saturday afternoon. 

SERIES HISTORY
vs. Clark

•    Babson is 43-19 all-time against Clark in a series that dates back to 1996.
•    The Beavers swept last season's doubleheader and have won 25 consecutive games over the Cougars going back to 2012.
•    The Green and White has allowed three runs or fewer in nine straight games dating back to game two of the 2018 doubleheader between the teams. 

vs. WPI
•    Babson is 39-38 all-time against the Engineers in a series that dates back to 1989.
•    The Beavers took two of three games in Worcester last season and have won 12 of their last 17 versus WPI going back to 2017.
•    Eight of the last 10 games between the Green and White and the Engineers have been decided by either one or two runs. 

LAST MEETING
vs. Clark

•    Graduate student Kate Karamouzis went 3-for-4 with an RBI single and juniors Sara Moore and Athena Hadjipanayis and sophomore Sophia Pak each recorded two hits apiece as Babson defeated Clark, 4-0, in game two of a doubleheader in Worcester, Mass., on April 29, 2023.
•    Senior Molly Hennessy added a double, Moore swiped two bags and Nicole Sestito recorded the second shutout of her career for the Beavers, who scored eight times over the final two innings to record an 8-5 victory in game one.
•    Rebecca Mauro went 2-for-3 for the Cougars, who made seven errors in the twin bill.

vs. WPI
•    Senior Caroline Taylor went 3-for-4 with four RBI, Lexi Morris '23 was 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored, and Karamouzis doubled and knocked in a pair of runs to help Babson defeat WPI in eight innings, 10-6, in the opening round of the NEWMAC Tournament on May 5, 2023, in Worcester. 
•    Taylor tied the game with a two-out single in the top of the sixth and keyed a four-run eighth inning with a two-out, two-run single to center for the Beavers, who finished with six extra-base hits and six stolen bases in the win.
•    Liz Jordan went 3-for-3, Alicia Salvalzo doubled twice and had two RBI, and Emma Nagy added a two-run double for the Engineers, who rallied from a pair of two-run deficits over the first five innings. 

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
•    Babson (20-16, 9-7 NEWMAC) has won seven of its last nine games but is coming off a 6-5 eight-inning loss to No. 16 Tufts on Tuesday. 
•    Pak came through with a two-run single, Hennessy had an RBI knock and Handjipanayis and first-year Charlotte Raymond drew bases-loaded walks as part of a five-run first inning for the Beavers, who were limited to just five hits over the final seven frames. 
•    First-year Emily Walsh is batting .327 with three extra-base hits, 18 stolen bases, 17 RBI and 15 runs scored, Moore is hitting .321 with five doubles, two triples, 18 stolen bases, 11 RBI and 21 runs scored, and Raymond has upped her average to .316 with four doubles, a home run and a team-high 21 runs batted in. 
•    Senior Moira O'Reilly (13-7, 1.56 ERA) has won her last nine decisions and has recorded 191 strikeouts in 130.0 innings pitched, while first-year Katie Vlacich is 7-9 with a 3.53 ERA and a pair of shutouts in 103.0 innings of work. 

SCOUTING THE COUGARS
•    Clark (6-26, 1-15 NEWMAC) has dropped its last seven games after falling 5-1 to Springfield in game two of last Saturday's doubleheader. 
•    Mauro, Felicia Salvati and Charlise Quigley all doubled and Samantha Crowley provided an RBI single for the Cougars, who left 10 runners on base in the loss. 
•    Mauro is batting .380 with eight doubles, 18 RBI and 18 runs scored, Salvati is hitting .286 with five doubles and 16 runs batted in and Crowley owns a .245 average to go along with 19 walks, 15 stolen bases and 18 runs scored. 
•    Megan Dube is 4-8 with a 3.41 ERA in 78.0 innings, Brooke Buzzeo (0-8, 3.79 ERA) has allowed just three earned runs over her last two starts and Keira Langus is 2-9 with a 5.17 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 66.1 innings of work. 

SCOUTING THE ENGINEERS
•    WPI (20-13-1, 11-5 NEWMAC) had its 11-game winning streak stopped by Coast Guard, falling 10-7 in game two of last Saturday's doubleheader in Worcester. 
•    Shaina Lazarus was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored, while Sandy Fairbairn and Riley O'Brien both had two hits, scored twice and knocked in a run for the Engineers, who led 7-2 before the Bears erupted for eight runs in the top of the seventh inning. 
•    Fairbairn is batting .485 with seven doubles, three home runs 26 RBI and 20 runs scored, Virginia McKinny is hitting .410 with 10 doubles, a homer, 19 stolen bases, 19 RBI and 28 runs scored, and O'Brien enters the weekend with a .360 average to go along with 11 doubles, six dingers and a team-high 39 runs batted in. 
•    Lazarus is 7-2 with a 3.48 ERA in 62.1 innings, Naomi Boldebuck is 7-4 with a 3.73 earned run average over 62.0 innings pitched and Kaitlyn Barr has gone 5-3 with a 3.75 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 61.2 innings of work on the year. 

FINAL WEEKEND FRENZY
•    Springfield (13-3) enters the final weekend with a two-game lead while the six teams, including both Babson and WPI are separated by just two games with four games remaining.
•    MIT, WPI and Wheaton are all 11-5, Coast Guard is 10-6 and the Beavers and Smith are 9-7 entering Friday's contests. 
•    The top five seeds will begin NEWMAC Tournament play on Wednesday, while the teams that finish sixth and seventh will meet on Monday to decide who earns the final spot in the double-elimination portion of the championship. 

MOORE SETS STOLEN BASES RECORD
•    With her fourth-inning swipe of second on Tuesday against Tufts, Moore became Babson's all-time leader with 64 career stolen bases passing the previous mark of 63 set by Andrea Cartullo '07 from 2004-07. 
•    Her record-setting stolen base also was the 100th of the season for the Green and White, marking the first time in school history it has reached the century mark. 

CANAN CLOSING IN ON 600
•    Head coach Dave Canan, now in his 26th season, is sitting on 598 wins and needs just two more to become the 23rd active Division III coach with 600 victories. 
•    The second longest tenured head coach in the NEWMAC, Canan boasts a .609 winning percentage, has a chance to become one of just the sixth coach with more than 20 years of Division III experience in New England to reach 600 wins.

HOT AT THE PLATE
•    Over the last nine games, graduate student Michaela Russell is batting .433 (13-for-30) with three doubles, eight stolen bases, five RBI and 10 runs scored. 
•    Karamouzis, who has reached base safely in 12 straight games, boasts a .643 on-base percentage and is hitting .412 (7-for-17) with three extra-base hits, eight walks and three runs scored in her last nine starts.
•    Raymond, who has a hit in 14 of her last 15 games, is batting .385 with six RBI in the last nine games, Walsh is hitting .375 with five stolen bases in her last eight starts, and Hennessy has 10 RBI in her last nine outings. 

O'REILLY NAMED NFCA PITCHER OF THE WEEK
•    O'Reilly, who became the program's all-time leader in shutouts in the game one victory at Salve Regina and is the first Babson pitcher to spin back-to-back no-hitters, was tabbed as the NFCA Division III Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday.
•    In 10 starts going back to April 6, O'Reilly is 9-0 with five shutouts, a 1.09 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 64.0 innings. She boasts a 0.94 WHIP and is holding opposing hitters to a .167 average during this stretch. 

LAST CALL AT ALUMNI FIELD
•    Hennessy, Karamouzis, O'Reilly, Taylor and seniors Chloe Joslin, as well as Russell and fellow graduate student Cassidy Musco will play the final home games of their respective careers at Alumni Field on Friday and Saturday. 
•    The group helped lead the program to a pair of NEWMAC regular season titles, a conference tournament championship in 2021 and two NCAA Tournament appearances, which includes advancing to the Geneseo (N.Y.) regional final in 2023. 
•    Overall they own a record of 97-50 and are 36-11 at Alumni Field. 

NUMBERS TO KNOW
•    Sixteen of the Beavers' 36 games this season have been decided by a single run and they are 9-7 in those contests. 
•    Babson is 18-1 this spring when allowing two runs or fewer. 
•    The Green and White is 12-4 when outhitting its opponents. 
•    The Beavers are 16-5 on the year when scoring the first run of the game.
