Softball Faces Elimination Game Against WPI on Saturday in Cambridge

WHAT TO KNOW

•    After falling to MIT in Thursday's winner's bracket contest, Babson will face WPI in an elimination game on Saturday at 12 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass. 
•    Should the Beavers win, they would advance to face MIT in the championship round needing two victories over the Engineers to claim a NEWMAC title.

BEAVERS VS. WPI
•    Babson is 41-38 all-time against WPI in a series that dates back to 1989.
•    Nine of the last 12 games between the teams have been decided by either one or two runs. 
•    The Beavers are 6-8 all-time versus the Engineers in the postseason and the teams last met in a NEWMAC Tournament elimination game back in 2017, when Babson defeated WPI 1-0. 

BEAVERS VS. MIT
•    Babson is 46-28 all-time against MIT in a series that dates back to 1988.
•    Five of the last nine games between the teams over the last three seasons have been decided by either one or two runs. 
•    The Beavers are 3-7 all-time against the Engineers in the conference playoffs with eight of the games decided by two runs or fewer. 

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
•    Fourth-seeded Babson (26-17) had its six-game winning streak snapped in Thursday's 2-1 eight-inning loss to third-seeded MIT. 
•    First-year Emily Walsh was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI, junior Athena Hadjipanayis singled twice and senior Moira O'Reilly allowed just one earned run on four hits over 7.2 innings for the Beavers, who left six runners on base in the loss. 
•    Moore is batting .348 with six doubles, two triples, 23 stolen bases, 14 RBI and 27 runs scored, graduate student Cassidy Musco is hitting .315 with four doubles, 14 stolen bases, 10 RBI and 18 runs scored, and classmate Michaela Russell enters the day with a .301 average to go along with five doubles, 15 stolen bases, 14 RBI and 22 runs scored. 
•    O'Reilly (16-7, 1.33 ERA) has won her last 11 decisions and leads the league in strikeouts (222) and shutouts (9) to go along with a 0.99 WHIP in 158.0 innings, while first-year Katie Vlacich is 10-9 with a 3.53 ERA and two shutouts in 113.0 innings on the year. 

SCOUTING WPI
•    Sixth-seeded WPI (23-18-1) has won three straight NEWMAC Tournament elimination games after beating top-seeded Springfield 9-1 in five innings on Thursday afternoon. 
•    Meg Sherwood went 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and three runs scored, while Destiny Lum and Emma Nagy both finished 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Engineers, who pounded out 12 hits and scored in every inning against the Pride. 
•    Sandy Fairbairn is batting .434 with 11 extra-base hits, 26 RBI and 20 runs scored, Naga is hitting .388 with 12 doubles, nine home runs, 36 RBI and 24 runs scored, and Riley O'Brien boasts a .350 average to go along with 13 doubles, eight homers, 46 RBI and 23 runs scored. 
•    Shaina Lazarus (9-4, 3.30 ERA) is 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA over 13.2 innings in four NEWMAC Tournament appearances, while Naomi Boldebuck is 8-6 with a 3.50 ERA and three shutouts in 16 starts on the year. 

SCOUTING MIT
•    Third-seeded MIT (26-12) has won four consecutive games and defeated second-seeded Wheaton 4-1 in the second of two games on Tuesday to stay unbeaten in NEWMAC Tournament play. 
•    Katia Pendowski plated the go-ahead run in the top of the fourth and Mackenzie Relihan added to the lead with a two-run single in the sixth for the Engineers, who saw Caroline Langmeyer allow one run on five hits in a complete-game effort to earn her second win of the day in the circle. 
•    Mikayla Cable is batting .402 with eight doubles, four home runs, 36 RBI and 35 runs scored, Olivia Scarpaci is hitting .367 with nine extra-base hits, 15 RBI and 20 runs scored, and Arianna Kumar enters the day with a .322 average to go along with four doubles, three triples, 26 RBI and 22 runs scored. 
•    Langmeyer (17-4, 1.75 ERA) has recorded 140 strikeouts in 132.0 innings and has won nine of her last 10 decisions, while Becca O'Connor is 4-5 with a 4.73 ERA in 60.2 innings this spring. 

CANAN REACHES 600 WINS
•    Thanks to his team's sweep of Clark last Friday afternoon, Babson head coach Dave Canan became the 23rd active Division III head coach with 600 career wins. 
•    Since arriving prior to the 2000 season, Canan has gone 602-384-1 for a .610 winning percentage, and has produced 12 seasons of at least 25 victories while finishing below .500 just twice. 

TOURNAMENT TRENDS
•    The Beavers are 11-8 in NEWMAC Tournament elimination games going back to 2013. 
•    Babson is 4-4 in conference tournament at Briggs Field dating back to 2018. 
•    O'Reilly and Vlacich are holding opposing hitters to a .162 average in 19.2 innings in this year's tournament. 
•    Eleven of the 13 runs Babson has scored over its first three tournament games have come over the first three innings. 

MOORE NAMED NEWMAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
•    After producing a pair of multi-hit games and going 10-for-16 (.625) at the plate with one double, four stolen bases, three RBI and five scored, Moore was tabbed as the league's player of the week on Monday. 
•    She had a .611 on-base percentage and slugged .688 over five games to help the Beavers end the regular season with four straight wins. 

REWRITING THE RECORD BOOK
•    Already the program's leader with 764 strikeouts and 24 shutouts, O'Reilly recorded her 61st win of her career against Springfield on Tuesday to pass Ali Reilly '18 as the program's all-time leader. 
•    O'Reilly's ninth shutout of the year on Tuesday against the Pride also marked her single-season program record achieved back in 2022. 
•    Senior Kate Karamouzis drew three more bases on balls on Tuesday to up her season total to 28 and enters Saturday ranked second in program history behind only Jack Enos '13 with 81 career walks. Enos drew 82 free passes from 2010-13. 

TOURNAMENT TESTED
•    O'Reilly is 10-7 with a 1.72 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP and 116 strikeouts in 114.0 innings in her career in the postseason.  
•    In 16 games NCAA and NEWMAC Tournament games over the last three years, Karamouzis is batting .400 with three doubles, two triples, 11 RBI and eight runs scored, while Moore is hitting .380 with 12 runs scored from the leadoff spot. 

STREAKING INTO THE POSTSEASON
•    Moore has reached base safely in 12 straight games. 
•    Musco enters Saturday's contest against WPI riding a seven-game hitting streak, while first-year Jackie Paglieri has singled in three consecutive games. 

BEAVER BITES
•    Moore is first on the team with 12 multi-hit games, while Walsh has at least two hits in 10 contests and Musco owns eight multi-hit performances. 
•    Raymond, who hit a three-run homer in the win over Smith, leads the Green and White with 26 runs batted in and has a team-high eight multi-RBI games. 
•    Hadjipanayis leads the Beavers in both doubles (9) and extra-base hits (11). 
•    Moore (23), Hadjipanayis (20), Walsh (18), Russell (15) and Musco (14) all rank among the top 10 in the NEWMAC in stolen bases. 

NUMBERS TO KNOW
•    The Beavers are 11-8 in one-run games and 13-9 on the year in games decided by two or fewer runs. 
•    Babson is 23-2 on the year when allowing two runs or fewer this spring. 
•    The Green and White is 21-5 when scoring first and 11-2 when putting up a run in the first inning. 
•    The Beavers are 17-4 when outhitting their opponents. 
•    Babson is 23-5 when it is leading or tied after five innings this season.
