SPRINGFIELD, Mass.— Senior
Anthony Rodriguez (Prairie View, Ill.) captured his second straight men's 10,000 meters championship and the Babson College men registered two school records and a pair of New England Division III Championship qualifiers on day one of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) track & field championships Friday afternoon at Springfield College's Blake Track.
The Beavers are in third place in the team scoring heading into Saturday's events, just a half point out of second. MIT has a wide lead in the standings with 77 points, while WPI is second with 38.5 points and Babson is third with 38. Springfield (24), Coast Guard (16.5) and Wheaton (1) round out the team scoring. Five events were completed while two events ran preliminaries and the decathlon completed five of the 10 events.
Rodriguez claimed this year's 10K title with a time of 31:29.25, more than 11 seconds faster than last year's winning time of 31:40.51 and 1.7 seconds ahead of runner-up Vedang Lad of MIT (31:30.95.). Babson junior
Julian Ivarra (Plano, Texas), who finished fifth last year, brought home third place this year in a time of 31:41.82, shaving two and a half minutes off his time from last year. First-year
Jonathan Hanscom (Hadley, Mass.) placed 11th in the race in a time of 34:15.89.
Senior
Michael Agard (Marietta, Ga.) captured second place in the long jump with a program-record leap of 22-feet, 9.75-inches, a mark that qualifies him for the NCAA New England Championships. He finished less than six inches shy of first-place Kenneth Wei of MIT (23-feet, 3.5-inches).
First-year
Nicolas Kube (Dover, Mass.) had an impressive second-place finish in the javelin, recording a program-record mark of 178-feet, 3-inches and qualifying for the NCAA New England Championships. His throw was more than seven feet beyond his previous best of 171-2. Junior
Jack Reynolds (Fairfield, Conn.) placed 12th with a mark of 135-feet, 8-inches.
Rodriguez, Agard and Kube earn All-NEWMAC honors with top-two finishes at the championships.

Eric Bottern (Saint Paul, Minn.) registered his second straight third-place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 153-feet, 2-inches. He finished 5-feet, 8-inches behind second place Connor Kalvar of MIT. Other Babson finishers include senior
Liam Cosgrove (Wakefield, Mass.), 10th with a mark of 115-feet, 4-inches; sophomore
Joseph Addotta (Ridgefield, Conn.), 11th with a mark of 112-feet; and first-year
Coleman Hayes (New York, N.Y.), 14th with a mark 96-feet, 7-inches.
The Beavers had two athletes qualify for Saturday's finals in the 100-meter dash, led by first-year
Chris McDonough (North Andover, Mass.) who registered the day's fastest time of 10.78 seconds. Agard qualified eighth with a time of 11.08 seconds, earning a spot in the finals by 0.001 seconds. Senior
Demarre Johnson (Dallas, Texas) finished 11th in a time of 11.14 seconds.
Babson also had two athletes qualify for Saturday's final in the 110-meter hurdles with season-best times in the prelims as junior
Harrison Prucher (Hopkinton, Mass.) placed fifth in a time of 15.67 seconds and first-year
Gabe Rosenberg (Silver Spring, Md.) finished eighth in 15.85 seconds.
Junior
Will Dean (Belmont, Mass.) sits in second place through five events of the decathlon with 2,591 points, two points ahead of third place. Dean was first in the long jump (19-feet, 11.75-inches) and shot put (30-feet, 7.5-inches) and second in the 100 meters (11.95).
