Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Graduate student
Sam Morgan (Charles Town, W. Va.) scored a pair of second-half goals to help visiting Babson College defeat Western New England University, 2-0, in non-conference men's soccer action on Thursday afternoon at Suprenant Field.
With the win, Babson improves to 3-2-1 overall while Western New England drops to 0-3-2 on the year.
Junior goalkeeper
Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) made three saves to record his fourth clean sheet in six starts for the Beavers. His counterpart, Golden Bears' first-year Miles Lanier (Weare, N.H.), stopped two shots in the loss.
Morgan broke the scoreless deadlock in the 63rd minute with his first goal of the season. Graduate student
Owen Guglielmino (Cheshire, Conn.) made a long run down the right sideline after White easily handled a long free kick by the hosts. His cross found sophomore
Robin Pestka (Highland Park, N.J.), and although Lanier stopped the initial shot, Morgan put away the rebound for a 1-0 advantage.
The Green and White doubled its lead in the 81st minute when graduate student
Justin Stone (Cary, N.C.) was dragged down in the left side of the box on another counter. Mogran stepped up and converted the ensuing penalty kick to put the game away.
The Golden Bears put together their best scoring opportunities just after the break with three shots, including a strike by sophomore Shay O'Neill (Belchertown, Mass.) that hit the left post over the final 11 minutes of the second half.
Western New England finished with a slim 13-12 edge in shots, while the Beavers held the advantage in shots on goal (5-3) and corner kicks (3-2).
Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson hosts WPI in its conference opener at 1 p.m., while the Golden Bears meet Curry at 2:30 p.m.
