WESTWOOD, Mass.—Four members of the Babson College men's lacrosse program were named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) 25th Anniversary Team last week.
Long poles
Christian Cattaruzza '15,
Jack O'Donoghue '18 MSF '19,
John Antaya '21 and
Drew Thomas '22 were among 27 players honored by the league. The team and coaches were voted on by current head coaches and sports information directors at the conference's seven institutions that sponsor men's lacrosse. To be eligible for the 25th-anniversary team, student-athletes must have earned All-NEWMAC first-team honors at least twice prior to the 2023 season, and/or have been selected as the league's player or defensive player of the year. Following many years as the Pilgrim League, the NEWMAC began sponsoring men's lacrosse in 2014.
A two-time All-NEWMAC first team and a 2015 NEILA All-Region selection, Cattaruzza is the Beavers' all-time leader with 185 caused turnovers and ranks fourth with 260 ground balls in 71 career games. He set a single-season program record with 59 forced turnovers in 2014 and also scooped up a career-best 92 ground balls that spring.
O'Donoghue earned a pair of all-conference first-team nods and became just the second player in program history to be selected as a USILA All-America honorable mention in 2017 after finishing with 95 ground balls and a career-high 42 caused turnovers. He ranks fourth in Babson history with 84 forced turnovers and his 235 ground balls are good for seventh on the school's all-time list.
The Beavers' first NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2021, Antaya earned a pair of all-conference honors as well as all-region and All-America honorable mention laurels during his senior campaign. Despite being limited to 44 career games, including just 12 contests over his final two seasons because of COVID, he ranks seventh in program history with 53 caused turnovers to go along with 115 ground balls.
A two-time All-NEWMAC and 2021 IMLCA Region 1 selection, Thomas achieved career highs with 33 ground balls and 30 caused turnovers as a senior in 2022. He ranks sixth in Babson history with 60 caused turnovers and also collected 80 ground balls in just 41 games after having two seasons affected by the pandemic.
