Men's Lacrosse Places 17 on NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Team

MARLBOROUGH, Mass.—The Babson College men's lacrosse program had 17 players honored for their hard work in the classroom when the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced its Academic All-Conference team on Thursday.

Seniors Tommy French (Rumson, N.J.) and Bennett Smith (Lake Oswego, Ore.) earned NEWMAC Academic All-Conference honors for the third year in a row and senior Will Reading (Southlake, Texas) and juniors Cooper Chapman (Hingham, Mass.), Seamus Rooney (Bay Shore, N.Y.), Ryan St. Onge (Avon, Conn.), Ethan Swenson (Phoenix, Ariz.), and Luke Wang (Simsbury, Conn.) were named to the squad for the second consecutive season.

First-time Academic All-Conference recipients include graduate students Joey Allen (Philadelphia, Pa.), Beau Burns (Washington, D.C.) and Hugh Curran (Needham, Mass.), junior Ellis McDonald (Sag Harbor, N.Y.), and sophomores Jesse Buchanan (Niskayuna, N.Y.), Jake Caldwell (Bernardsville, N.J.), Ryan Gaudion (Marietta, Ga.), Henry Rome (Chestnut Hill, Mass.), and Chase Wightman (Little Compton, R.I.).
 
Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale after the 2025 fall semester, achieved second-year academic status, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire semester.

A Finance major, Smith enjoyed an outstanding season to wrap up an impressive career for the Beavers, including NEWMAC Athlete of the Year and first-team All-Conference. He started 19 of the 21 games and finished second on the team in scoring with a career-high 62 points on a career-best 29 goals and 33 assists while scooping up a career-high 40 ground balls. He had at least one point in all 21 outings and produced at least three points in 15 games, finishing with 15 points (7g, 8a) in Babson's five post-season contests. A four-year veteran and three-time All-NEWMAC selection, he finished with career totals of 81 goals, 108 assists and 189 points, good for sixth on Babson's career scoring list. French, a Finance major, appeared in a career-high seven games this season and scored his second career goal, upping his career totals to 10 games with two goals, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

An Accounting major, Reading returned from an injury to see action in eight games this spring, including all five post-season contests. An All-NEWMAC selection in 2025, he won 39 of his 77 face-offs (.506) and scooped up 23 ground balls this season, including winning 13-of-14 face-offs in an NCAA Tournament win over Mass. Maritime. A four-year veteran, he appeared in 50 career games and won 329 of 625 face-offs (.526) with 155 ground balls, ranking third in program history in face-off wins and sixth in face-off winning percentage.

An Accounting & Finance major, Rooney earned his third straight All-Conference honor this spring after starting 16 of his 17 games and finishing fourth on the team in scoring with 44 points (30g, 14a), including five man-up goals, second-most on the team. The three-year veteran has started 49 of his 51 career games and scored 96 goals and added 53 assists for 149 points, which is tied for 14th on the program's career points list. A Finance major, Chapman saw action in a career-high 20 games and registered 10 points (5g, 5a) with one man-up goal. A three-year veteran of 45 career games, he has 17 goals and 10 assists for 27 points.

An Accounting major, St. Onge started on defense in 18 of his 20 games, finishing third on the team with 15 caused turnovers and seventh with 29 ground balls while scoring three goals. He spearheaded a Babson team defense that led the league with 8.71 goals allowed per game. A veteran of 56 career games, he has 35 caused turnovers and 55 ground balls. Wang, an Operations Management major, saw action in eight games and a pair of goals. A Finance/Accounting major, Swenson appeared in four games this spring as a midfielder.

Babson's three graduate students on the Academic All-Conference teams made significant contributions to the team. A transfer from Washington & Lee, Allen earned first team All-Conference and All-America honorable mention after leading the team in scoring with 73 points (47g, 26a), including 10 man-up goals, which ranked 12th in Division III. His 73 points tied for fifth on the program's single-season scoring list. A transfer from Bowdoin, Burns earned first team All-Conference and All-America honorable mention after winning a program-best 72.4 percent of his face-offs (212-of-293) while scooping up 146 ground balls over 18 games. He ranked second on the Beavers' single-season list in ground balls and third in face-off wins in addition to ranking seventh in Division III in face-off winning percentage and 32nd nationally in ground balls per game (8.11).  A transfer from Trinity, Curran appeared in 10 games on defense for the Beavers and collected five caused turnovers and five ground balls, helping the team hold 15 of its 21 opponents to single-digit scoring.

A Business major and transfer from Ohio State, McDonald started 20 of his 21 games on defense for the Beavers. He registered 15 caused turnovers and 20 ground balls while helping the team lead the league with an average of 8.71 goals allowed per game. A Finance major, Wightman appeared in 12 games off the bench for the Beavers, producing 14 points on eight goals and six assists and producing four multi-point games.

Rome, a Business major, and Buchanan, a Finance major, each appeared in seven games this spring for the Green and White. Rome scored one goal in a win over Emerson and Buchanan had one caused turnover and one ground ball as a defender for the Beavers. Caldwell, a Computational & Mathematical Finance major, saw action in six games as a midfielder and scored once in a win over UMass Boston, and Gaudion, a Finance major, got some playing time in four games as a long-stick middie.

The Beavers put together a historic season under head coach Rocky Batty, finishing with an 18-3 overall record after winning its fourth straight NEWMAC Tournament title, hosting an NCAA regional weekend at MacDowell Field, and advancing to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for the first time in program history by winning a pair of national tournament games.
