Late Goal Lifts Williams Past Men's Lacrosse, 11-10

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Nick Bates (Newtown Square, Pa.) scored a man-up goal with 2:20 remaining in the fourth quarter to break a 10-10 tie as Williams College capitalized on five man-up goals to defeat Babson College, 11-10, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference men's lacrosse game at MacDowell Field.

With the loss, Babson had its two-game winning snapped and dropped to 7-3 overall while Williams improved to 6-4 on the season.

Junior Topher Bower (Chicago, Ill.) matched his career-high with four goals to lead the Beavers, while graduate student Will Spangenberg (Dover, Mass.) and senior Chi Chi Price (Hingham, Mass.) notched three goals apiece in the setback. Senior Matt Stucchi (Rexford, N.Y.) chipped in with two assists, junior Grey Sunderland (Bellevue, Wash.) won 15-of-23 faceoffs and scooped up a game-high nine ground balls, and classmate Brendan Maher (Melrose, Mass.) collected four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Senior goalie Will Parducci (Manhattan Beach, Calif) made seven saves in the loss.

Sophomore Jesse Shapiro (Glencoe, Ill.) tallied three goals and an assist, junior Calvin Caputo (Pennington, N.J.) scored three times and Bates finished with a goal and three assists for the Ephs. Firt-year Cade Schuckman (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) added a goal and an assist, classmate Drew Nicholson (Setauket, N.Y.) grabbed a team-high four ground balls, and senior Matthew Freitas (Weymouth, Mass.) made 13 saves in the win.

The Beavers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game. Bower scored consecutive goals to open the scoring in the first five minutes and Spangenberg went back-to-back to double the lead.

Williams battled back and scored the next six goals over the next 15 minutes to take the lead. Caputo had three goals in the surge, including a pair of man-up strikes, and Schuckman scored one goal and set up another. Price stopped the streak with a man-up goal for Babson in the final minute of the second quarter to send the teams into the break with the Ephs up, 6-5.

After Spangenberg tied up the game at 6-6 four minutes into the third quarter, Shapiro helped Williams go on another surge, scoring three goals, including two with a man-advantage, and assisting on a fourth as the Ephs pulled ahead 10-6 after three.

The Beavers would not go away quietly, rallying with a four-goal streak of their own. Bower and Price scored twice each, with Price notching the game-tying goal with 5:55 remaining. Bates put the Ephs back in front with 2:20 to play, and Babson could not get the equalizer on its final two possessions.

The Green and White had a 40-26 advantage in shots, a 29-22 margin in ground balls, and won 15 of the 25 face-offs. The difference was on special teams, where Williams was 5-of-6 and Babson was 1-of-6 on man-up situations.

Babson returns to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) games next Friday at Emerson beginning at 7 p.m. Williams returns home to host Hamilton in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) contest Wednesday at 5 p.m.
