CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Three different competitors broke the school record in the long jump highlighting a number of strong performances on day one of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships at MIT on Saturday.
The Beavers totaled eight points on day one and sit in sixth place overall through eight of 20 events.
First-years Ashna Krishnamurthy (Saratoga, Calif.), Brooke Jankowski (Methuen, Mass.) and Trista Sicard (Mansfield, Mass.) all bettered the school record of 16-feet, 7.75-inches set by Jankowski earlier this spring. Krishnamurthy, who placed fifth overall, recorded a jump of 17-feet, 2.75-inches in the last of her six attempts to finish one spot ahead of Jankowski, whose leap of 17-feet, 0.50-inches came in her second attempt of the day.
Sicard was the first of three to set a new mark on Saturday with a result of 16-feet, 9.25-inches in her first jump on the way to finishing eighth.
Jankowski posted a season-best time of 15.26, which was good for third place in the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles. First-year Julia Pike (Mansfield, Mass.) narrowly missed joining her in the finals with a season-best time of 16.50.
First-year Robyn Wilkes (Atlanta, Ga.) also grabbed the eighth and final spot in Sunday's 100-meter dash finals with a season-best time of 12.72 in the prelims. The only other track event on Saturday was the 10,000 meters where senior Nicole Johns (Peabody, Mass.) finished 15th with a time of 42:49.31.
Junior Lauren Zatulove (Los Angeles, Calif.) recorded three top-two finishes and is currently second in the heptathlon with 1940 points through four events. She won the shot put with a throw of 30-feet, 7.75-inches, came in second by clearing 4-feet, 6.25-inches in the high jump and was the runner-up with a time of 29.21 in the 200 meters. Zatulove also placed third with a season-best time of 18.65 in the 100-meter hurdles.
Day two of the NEWMAC Championships is set to get underway at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
