Weekend Preview: Softball Visits No. 22 MIT and Clark to Wrap Up Regular Season

SERIES HISTORY
vs. MIT
• The Beavers are 44-24 all-time against MIT in a series that dates back to 1988.
• Babson swept the regular season doubleheader over the Engineers last year, 2-1 and 3-0, but MIT defeated the Green and White in the NEWMAC Tournament, 7-4.
• The teams have split the last 10 games played in Cambridge, which all happened between 2017 and 2019.
vs. Clark
• Babson is 41-19 all-time against Clark in a series that dates back to 1996.
• The Beavers have won their last 23 games versus the Cougars going back to 2012, which a sweep in Babson Park last season.

LAST MEETING
vs. MIT
• Anya Chase '22 hit a solo home run and allowed just one run over five innings as third-seeded MIT knocked top-seeded and 17th-ranked Babson out of the NEWMAC Tournament, 4-1, on May 7, 2022 at Alumni Field.
• Sophomore Sara Moore had three of Babson's six hits, while junior Molly Hennessy singled and drove in a run. Senior Kate Karamouzis and junior Chloe Joslin also had hits for the Beavers, and junior Moira O'Reilly suffered the loss after surrendering four earned runs and fanning four in 5.2 innings.
• Chase went 2-for-5 at the plate and scored twice, while sophomore Dana Bell had two hits and knocked in a run. Sophomore Mikayla Cable had an RBI hit and junior Mackenzie Relihan brought home a run with a sacrifice fly.
vs. Clark
• Joslin knocked out four hits and drove in three runs as No. 18 Babson captured a pair of victories over Clark, 5-3 and 8-2, on April 30, 2022 at Alumni Field.
• Senior Lexi Morris had two hits and drove in two and Logan MacDonald '22 went the distance to record the win in game one. Karamouzis had two hits and knocked in one, Audrey Labouliere '22 tripled and scored a run and classmate Isabel Aguilar '22 and Hennessy each drove in a run in the win. Joslin went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI in game two while Moore and Hennessy each had two hits and drove in a run. Junior Nicole Sestito went the distance to earn the win, allowing just two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four.
• Kaylee Gibson '22 went 3-for-3 with a walk in game one for the Cougars, while Francesca Cirone '22 also had two hits, including a double, in the setback. Junior Rebecca Mauro also doubled and knocked in two. Gibson went 2-for-3 with an RBI in game two, accounting for two of the four Clark hits. Cirone also had a hit and an RBI and senior Eliza Lindberg singled and scored in the setback.

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
• Babson (18-18, 7-7 NEWMAC) looks to bounce back after dropping six of its last seven games, including a 6-5 non-conference loss at Endicott on Tuesday in Beverly, Mass.
• Moore reached base three times with two hits and a walk, adding an RBI and a run scored for the Beavers. First-year Allie Cubberly cracked a double and junior Caroline Taylor and sophomore Athena Hadjipanayis also collected hits in the setback, and Sistito struck out two in the complete game effort.
• Moore (.390) has seven extra-base hits, 26 stolen bases, 14 RBI and 27 runs scored, Karamouozis (.324) has six doubles, five homers, 17 runs batted in and 23 runs scored, and Morris (.289) has eight doubles, five home runs and 27 runs driven in.
• O'Reilly (15-5, 1.79 ERA) has recorded league-best 211 strikeouts in 136.2 innings and has three shutouts while holding opposing hitters to a .199 average.

SCOUTING THE ENGINEERS
• No. 22 MIT (27-4, 13-1 NEWMAC) has won its last four games, including back-to-back home sweeps over Wheaton and Smith last weekend.
• First-year Ava Ladd went 5-for-8 with a double, triple and four RBI and sophomore Kennedy Adkinson was 5-for-7 with a double, triple and two RBI in the sweep of Smith. Senior Jordan Sell went 3-for-4 with an RBI in game one and classmate Mackenzie Bivin had a double and two RBI in the nightcap. Sophomore Becca O'Connor tossed a five-hit shutout in the game one win and graduate student Deb Torres (4 Inn., 2 R, 5 H) and first-year Caroline Langmeyer (3 Inn., 2 H, 1 K) combined to earn the win in game two.
• Sell (.443) has eight doubles, 20 RBI and 35 runs scores, Ladd is batting .424 with seven doubles, Bivin (.419) has 11 doubles, four home runs and 44 RBI, and Cable (.418) has 11 doubles, 21 RBI and 25 runs scored. Adkinson (.398) has nine doubles and has scored a team-high 37 runs.
• Langmeyer is 15-2 with a 1.33 ERA, striking out 118 batters in 110.2 innings, and O'Connor is 9-1 with a 2.40 ERA and 30 whiffs in 73.0 innings.

SCOUTING THE COUGARS
• Clark (5-28, 1-13 NEWMAC), which hosts Smith on Friday, has lost two in a row and 14 of its last 15 games, including 10-4 and 1-0 losses at cross-town rivals WPI last Saturday in Worcester.
• Mauro was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs batted in in the opener, while junior Samatha Crowley went 2-for-3 with a run scored in game one and had a hit in each game. First-year Felicia Salvati also collected a hit in both ends of the twin bill.
• Mauro (.411) has a team-high 37 hits, nine doubles, and 20 RBI, Salvati (.319) has six doubles and 12 RBI, and Crowley (.303) has five doubles and a team-high 23 runs scored. First-year Emelie Spence has a team-high two triples and classmate Erin Slaven belted the team's only home run.
• First-year Brooke Buzzeo (3-10, 4.32 ERA) has started 14 games for the Cougars while senior Nicole Buckley (1-9, 10 K's) and first-year Keira Langus (1-4, 19 K's) have started six games each.

A LOOK AT THE NEWMAC
• With the regular season wrapping up the weekend, the NEWMAC standings and tournament seeds are coming into focus. The top six teams qualify for this year's tournament.
• MIT (13-1) is comfortably atop the standings and is lining up to hosting the conference tournament next weekend, with Springfield, Coast Guard and WPI all tied for second at 10-4.
• Babson (7-7) enters the weekend is sixth place, one game back of Wheaton (8-6) and just one game ahead of Wellesley (4-8) in the loss column in the battle for the final playoff berth. Clark will finish out of playoff contention.

AMONG THE LEAGUE LEADERS
• Moore leads the NEWMAC with 27 stolen bases and ranks fourth with 46 hits and 10th with 27 runs scored.
• Morris is seventh in the conference with 27 RBI and tied with Karamouzis for second with five home runs, while Karamouzis is third with 19 walks.
• O'Reilly leads the NEWMAC in wins (15), complete games (16), innings pitched (136.2), opposing batting average (.199), and walks/hits allowed per innings pitched (1.05), and ranks second in shutouts (3) and fourth in ERA (1.79)

STRIKEOUT QUEEN
• Babson's all-time strikeout leader, O'Reilly has pushed her career total to 511 whiffs in 347 innings.
• With 211 Ks this season, she is the only Babson pitcher to strike out at least 200 batters in two seasons and trails only Kathleen Conway '14 (257 in 2013) and herself (250 last season) on the Babson single-season chart.
• O'Reilly ranks second in Division III in strikeouts (211) and third in strikeouts per seven innings (10.8) and leads the NEWMAC and ranks 78th in Division III in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.15).
• With her 41-12 career record, O'Reilly ranks sixth on Babson career list for victories and sits fifth with 13 shutouts.

BEAVER BITES
• Moore swiped another base at Endicott to extend her Babson single-season stolen base record to 27.
• Karamouzis has hit safely in 14 of her last 17 games, batting .386 in that span.
• Moore leads the team with 11 multi-hit games while Morris has nine and Karamouzis has eight. Morris also has a team-high seven multi-RBI games.

NUMBERS TO KNOW
• The Beavers are 12-2 this season and 53-6 since the start of 2021 when allowing two runs or fewer.
• Babson is 12-1 this season and has won 58 of 60 games over the last three seasons when leading after five innings.
• The Green and White are 7-4 in games decided by a single run and 13-7 when the margin is one or two runs this spring.
